A Maryville police officer who was critically injured during Vice President JD Vance’s motorcade is showing small but steady improvements, authorities said Sunday.
Field Training Officer Justin Brown was hurt Friday evening when his motorcycle collided with a Tennessee Highway Patrol vehicle on East Lamar Alexander Parkway at Merritt Road. The crash occurred about 17 miles south of Knoxville as agencies coordinated security for the vice president’s visit to a fundraiser at Blackberry Farm in Walland.
Brown was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, where he remains in the ICU.
Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp said Brown’s condition remains serious but has improved since the night of the crash.
“We know the prayers of the community continue to cover him,” Crisp said. “His progress is expected to be gradual, and he will remain hospitalized for an extended period of time, but we are grateful for the improvement we have seen since Friday.” (RELATED: NCPD Cheers Not Guilty Verdicts For Ex-San Antonio Officers)
One of the ambulances assigned to the vice president’s motorcade diverted to the scene and treated Brown immediately. Crisp said the rapid response likely saved Brown’s life.
Initial reports indicated that the state trooper involved in the crash had not been hospitalized. City officials later clarified that both the trooper and Brown were transported for evaluation and treatment. The trooper’s identity and condition have not been released.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol has launched an investigation into the collision, a standard step in incidents involving state personnel. (RELATED: Artillery Mishap During Marine Corps Celebration Sends Shrapnel Near VP Vance’s Motorcade)
Katherine Pierce, the Secret Service’s resident agent in charge in Knoxville, said the agency has monitored the situation closely. She said the collision did not affect the vice president’s safety or schedule.
“The safety and movement of our protectees were not impacted by this incident,” Pierce said.
While investigators continue to review what happened, local attention remains focused on Brown’s recovery, underscoring the risks officers face whether they are protecting their communities or national leaders.
Crisp asked residents to continue praying for Brown, his family, and the medical staff caring for him.
