President Donald Trump escalated his criticism of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), telling reporters aboard Air Force One that the congresswoman “should be thrown out of our country” if longstanding allegations about her immigration history were true.
“Somalia, where you have a Congress[woman] going around telling everybody about our Constitution, yet she supposedly came into our country by marrying her brother,” Trump said. “Well, if that’s true, she shouldn’t be a Congress[woman], and we should throw her the hell out of our country.”
Trump added that the United States “doesn’t need people coming into the country telling us what to do.”
Accusations that Omar entered the U.S. under a false family name or married her brother to help him obtain immigration benefits have circulated for years in conservative media.
Trump Ties Comments to Fraud Concerns in Minnesota
The president’s remarks came as Omar and other Minnesota Democrats defended Somali-American communities amid reports alleging “widespread fraud” in state healthcare and welfare systems. Trump has pointed to these investigations to justify his decision to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somali nationals, citing billions of dollars in missing funds.
Omar responded on social media earlier this week, accusing Trump of issuing “lawless threats” against Somalians and inflaming tensions for political gain.
Thanksgiving Post Renews Trump’s Attacks
Trump attacked Omar and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz in a Thanksgiving post to Truth Social, using sharply critical language.
He described Omar as “always wrapped in her swaddling hijab” and said she “does nothing but hatefully complain about our Country.”
He also referred to Somalia as a “decadent, backward, and crime-ridden nation,” while condemning Omar’s lack of gratitude toward the United States.
Origins of the Allegations
The claims Trump referenced were popularized in conservative commentary outlets such as the Powerline blog and were amplified by a Daily Mail article. Those reports alleged that Omar’s family used a false surname to enter the United States in 1995 and that Omar later married her biological brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, in 2009.
Escalating Feud Over Somalia Policy
Trump has increasingly targeted Omar as the administration moves toward stricter policies affecting Somali nationals, including his plan to end TPS protections and reassess immigration from countries he describes as “high-risk.”
In a September Truth Social post, Trump criticized Somalia as plagued by “persistent poverty, resurgent terrorism, piracy, corruption, and pervasive violence,” and questioned Omar’s right to “tell the U.S. government how to run America.”

She should be in prison
If true there are no options. Confirm status and go from there.
We couldn’t get rid of that that vile woman quick enough. She is a cancer. People like her HATE you and HATE America. Makes you wonder why she is here. Why because she knows America os the greatest country there is and provides the most opportunity. Yet she can’t admit it. President Trump is correct, I have NEVER heard her say ANYTHING positive… especially about America. Our military fought the bloodiest battle since Vietnam to liberate Somalia/Mogadishu…. this SAVED her parents and is what allowed her to come to America… Her rotten, backwards views and the treatment of the USA is the thankyou she gives. We don’t want it, dont need it, GET RID OF HER NOW !
She should have been gone four years ago. She hates this country!
