President Donald Trump announced Friday that he is voiding all executive orders and official documents signed using an autopen during Joe Biden’s time in office, escalating a controversy now under federal investigation.
In a late-night post on Truth Social, Trump asserted that “approximately 92%” of Biden’s executive documents were signed using an autopen — a device that mechanically reproduces a signature — and said that the practice had been conducted illegally by Biden aides without proper authorization.
Trump: “Any document signed with the autopen is hereby terminated”
“Any document signed by Sleepy Joe Biden with the Autopen… is hereby terminated, and of no further force or effect,” Trump wrote.
“The Radical Left Lunatics circling Biden… took the Presidency away from him,” Trump continued. “I am hereby cancelling all Executive Orders, and anything else that was not directly signed by Crooked Joe Biden, because the people who operated the autopen did so illegally.”
He further warned that if Biden claims he approved the autopen’s use, “he will be brought up on charges of perjury.”
Trump did not specify how the White House or federal agencies would identify or unwind affected orders, many of which governed immigration, energy, student loans, and regulatory policy.
Move Follows DOJ Probe Into Digital Autopen Use
Trump’s announcement comes shortly after Attorney General Pam Bondi launched a federal investigation into allegations that a “digital autopen” had been used to sign pardons and executive orders during the Biden administration. The probe was triggered by a House Oversight Committee report alleging widespread reliance on an autopen during Biden’s tenure.
According to the Washington Examiner, former Biden aide Neera Tanden testified in June that she directed autopen usage between October 2021 and May 2023 while serving as staff secretary and senior advisor. Tanden reportedly told lawmakers her direct contact with Biden was limited and said she was not entirely certain who gave final approval for the autopen’s use — a detail House Oversight Chairman James Comer highlighted as evidence of procedural breakdowns in Biden’s White House.
Trump Previously Mocked Biden’s Autopen Use
Trump has repeatedly mocked the Biden autopen allegations in interviews. In an Aug. 29 interview with the Daily Caller, Trump said he planned to include a “Biden Autopen” portrait in a “Presidential Wall of Fame.”
The Friday declaration goes significantly further, however, by stating the intention to nullify a swath of Biden-era directives — with legal experts anticipating immediate challenges from agencies, courts, and Congress.
Autopen use has been permitted in limited circumstances for decades, including during previous administrations, though with explicit presidential authorization.
Trump’s order is likely to ignite a legal and political battle over executive authority, presidential signatures, and the continuity of administrative actions carried out across changing administrations.
