According to reporting from The Bulwark, ICE is expected to shift its focus to Phoenix, Arizona, scaling up arrests, detentions, and deportations in Maricopa County — a politically mixed region that includes the blue-leaning city and its red suburbs. This follows ICE’s previous enforcement priorities in Democratic-dominated cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and Charlotte.
Former Department of Homeland Security officials told The Bulwark that federal immigration authorities plan a ramped-up enforcement push and a network of detention centers in Maricopa County in the coming weeks.
The move reflects a broader administration effort to expand immigration operations beyond traditional “sanctuary” jurisdictions and into areas with large immigrant populations.
This isn’t the first time Phoenix has seen intensified ICE activity. Local operations have sparked community tension.
Agents have been arresting immigrants outside the Phoenix immigration court, sometimes detaining people as they leave hearings — a practice that has drawn criticism from advocates.
Over the summer, community groups reported sightings of ICE activity across the Phoenix metro area, including in neighborhoods near West Phoenix, Maricopa, and Casa Grande.
The anticipated ICE focus on Phoenix comes amid a national push to increase deportations and enforcement actions, a policy direction championed by this administration.
Phoenix — with its diverse population and politically competitive environment — may see immigration enforcement become both a policy and a political flashpoint ahead of a competitive 2026 election cycle.
