Myla Rahman is taking aim at Rep. Maxine Waters’ 35-year tenure in Congress as she launches a primary challenge against the longtime Democratic lawmaker, arguing that voters are ready for a generational shift.
Rahman, a nonprofit executive, Los Angeles native is 34 years younger than the 87-year-old Waters. As she begins her campaign in California’s solidly blue 43rd Congressional District, Rahman is emphasizing what she describes as growing frustration with political leadership.
“People are sick and tired of the same old thing,” Rahman told the California Post in an interview this week.
Waters has represented the South Los Angeles district since 1991 and has not faced a serious primary challenge in more than a decade. Her long tenure has made her one of the most recognizable and controversial figures in Congress, particularly during President Donald Trump’s first term, when she emerged as one of his most outspoken critics. Rahman’s challenge comes at a time when some Democrats have voiced concerns about the age and longevity of their party’s leadership. That debate intensified after then-President Joe Biden initially sought re-election in 2024 before withdrawing from the race following a widely criticized debate performance against Trump that raised questions about his physical and mental acuity.
Although Republicans have little chance of flipping the heavily Democratic 43rd District in a general election, the primary challenge underscores broader concerns about career politicians within the Democratic Party.
“Democrats built a party run by career politicians like Maxine Waters who has been cashing taxpayer-funded paychecks since the Cold War. After decades clinging to power, these political fossils are getting tossed aside by the same radical activists they helped empower,” National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Christian Martinez said in a statement to Fox News Digital.
Waters continues to wield significant influence in Washington as the ranking Democrat on the powerful House Financial Services Committee. She remains a vocal critic of President Trump and recently questioned his fitness for office following his push to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook. In a heated exchange last week during a congressional hearing with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Waters asked, “Can you shut him up?”
Rahman formally filed her paperwork with the Federal Election Commission last week. She has said affordable healthcare will be a central focus of her campaign, citing her experience surviving two bouts of breast cancer.
With generational change emerging as a key theme in Democratic primaries, Rahman is betting that even in a safe blue district, voters may be open to new leadership
