Rep. Neal Dunn (R-Fla.) is reportedly planning an early retirement announcement next week — a decision that would eliminate the Republican majority in the U.S. House of Representatives.
With Republicans clinging to a 218–214 edge after Democrat Christian Menefee’s recent swearing-in, the margin for error has vanished.
Because tie votes fail in the House — and the vice president cannot break ties — even a single GOP vacancy would compel Speaker Mike Johnson to court at least one Democrat while keeping every Republican in line.
As Mediaite’s Sarah Rumpf noted, Florida Politics publisher Peter Schorsch broke the story that has quickly rattled Capitol Hill:
Schorsch first reported on Tuesday that his reporters were “trying to track down [a] rumor” about Dunn “resigning imminently rather than at [the] end of his term.”

Dunn stepping down now would imperil @HouseGOP’s majority.
Developing…
About a half-hour after Schorsch’s tweet, a spokesperson in Dunn’s office told Tallahassee Democrat reporter Jim Rosica that the congressman did not intend to resign early and would serve the remainder of his term.
New from the office of @DrNealDunnFL2: Spokesperson Eleanor Allison tells news media the congressman has no intention to resign early and will serve the rest of his current term, which ends in Jan. 2027.

But that wasn’t the end of the story, Schorsch insisted.
💯 not done with this story.

Schorsch followed up Wednesday with a new report citing a “top source” who said Dunn would announce he was retiring early at some point next week, along with a “time certain” before the midterms elections in November, setting up a special election for the summer.
A top source says @DrNealDunnFL2 will announce an early retirement next week for a “time certain” that will be before the Midterm.

Special election in Summer. https://t.co/jRJr9TeBEh
Dunn, 72, announced last month that he will retire from Congress at the end of his current term, writing on X, “After much prayerful consideration and discussion with my family, I have decided not to seek re-election to the United States House of Representatives. This will conclude my service after five meaningful terms representing the people of Florida’s Second Congressional District…”
According to Schorsch, Dunn’s retirement is health related and follows ongoing complications from COVID.
Several reporters approached Dunn Wednesday afternoon regarding the speculation. He responded that he was “not making any comments right now,” stopping short of denying the reports.
Last Friday’s announcement by Nevada Rep. Mark Amodei brings the number of House Republicans who have said they will not seek reelection in 2026 to 30, as the party works to defend its narrowest House majority in a century.
It remains unclear whether Dunn intends to serve out the remainder of his term.
