Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) delivered a sharply critical speech targeting President Donald Trump and his allies during a Sunday service in Atlanta, remarks that quickly spread online and fueled fresh speculation about the next presidential election.
Ossoff, 39, spoke from the pulpit at Big Bethel A.M.E. Church during the congregation’s annual “Social Justice Sunday.” In his address, the Georgia senator described Trump as a “spiritually broken president” and accused his administration of contributing to national instability.
“Our nation is afflicted and in crisis,” Ossoff said, citing concerns over health care access, economic inequality, and federal law enforcement actions. He also referenced Trump’s continued claims of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election, which have been repeatedly rejected by courts and election officials.
The speech was quickly clipped and circulated widely on social media, where prominent progressive commentators suggested Ossoff could emerge as a major Democratic figure heading into the next presidential cycle.
Zeteo founder Mehdi Hasan wrote that “the moment he wins in November he becomes a front runner for 2028,” while writer Sam Deutsch predicted Ossoff could win reelection comfortably in Georgia and gain momentum nationally.

he’s going to win reelection in Georgia by 5+ points in the fall and then he’s going to very quickly become the presidential frontrunner https://t.co/wrd540CVWX

Ossoff is widely seen as one of the party’s younger Senate voices, representing a battleground state that has become increasingly competitive. His political future may depend heavily on the outcome of his reelection bid, as Georgia remains a key testing ground for Democrats heading into the late 2020s.
Still, Ossoff is only one of several Democrats generating early buzz as potential contenders in 2028, even as the party remains focused on the current election cycle.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom, for instance, has long been viewed as a likely presidential hopeful, using his national platform to challenge Republican leaders directly on issues ranging from abortion policy to economic governance. Newsom has built a strong donor network and media presence, positioning himself as one of the party’s most visible executive leaders.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), another high-profile figure, has also drawn renewed attention in recent weeks, including with a recent trip to Munich that raised eyebrows among political observers and added to ongoing questions about her evolving role on the national stage. While AOC has not indicated plans to run for president, she remains one of the most influential voices among younger progressives.
Other Democrats frequently mentioned in early 2028 discussions include Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Sen. Raphael Warnock of Georgia.
For now, talk of a 2028 field remains speculative, but Ossoff’s viral speech underscores how quickly political attention can shift toward the next presidential race — particularly as Democrats search for leaders who can unify their coalition in an increasingly divided national environment.
