CBS News justice correspondent Scott MacFarlane announced Monday that he is leaving the network, telling colleagues he is looking “forward to some independence” in the next phase of his career.
In a memo to staff, MacFarlane said the decision to depart was his own.
“To my incredible colleagues at CBS: I want to personally let you know that my work will soon no longer appear on CBS News,” MacFarlane wrote in the memo. “This is my decision, and I appreciate the bosses at CBS for understanding it.”
He also reflected on his time at the network and the work he did alongside colleagues.
“I will always value the opportunity I had to work alongside the talented and committed professionals here. I’m proud to have had the words ‘CBS correspondent’ next to my name – always will be,” he wrote.
UPDATE: i just shared this note with my colleagues:

"To my incredible colleagues at CBS: I want to personally let you know that my work will soon no longer appear on CBS News. This is my decision, and I appreciate the bosses at CBS for understanding it.
I will always value…
MacFarlane said he plans to pursue new opportunities outside the network.
“For the next phase of my career, I look forward to some independence and finding new spaces to share my work in line with my personal goals. I thank you all. The work will not stop, and I’ll always be a call away.”
MacFarlane joined CBS News in 2021 and became widely known for his reporting on the aftermath of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot. His final article for the network, published last Friday, focused on the incident.
According to Guardian U.S. media reporter Jeremy Barr, “it was known that MacFarlane was unhappy with the network’s very brief mention of the Jan. 6 anniversary on the CBS Evening News.”
I'm told that Bari Weiss acknowledged on the network's 9 a.m. call that MacFarlane generated several scoops for CBS (though it was known that MacFarlane was unhappy with the network's very brief mention of the Jan. 6 anniversary on the CBS Evening News)

MacFarlane is the latest in a series of departures from CBS News following its takeover by David Ellison and the appointment of Bari Weiss as editor-in-chief last year.
CBS Evening News co-anchor John Dickerson announced he would leave the network in October, shortly after Weiss assumed the editor-in-chief role.
More recently, CBS Evening News producer Alicia Hastey and 60 Minutes correspondent Anderson Cooper also resigned from the network last month.
