At a memorial service honoring the life of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, his son Jesse Jackson Jr. delivered pointed remarks criticizing speeches given by several former American presidents, arguing they failed to fully capture the legacy of his father.
Speaking during a Saturday service in Chicago, Jackson Jr. said that while the previous day’s memorial featured prominent political figures, the speakers did not truly understand the longtime civil rights activist.
“Yesterday I listened for several hours of three United States presidents who do not know Jesse Jackson,” Jackson Jr. said.
The criticism was directed at former presidents Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and Joe Biden, all of whom spoke at a public memorial service held Friday to honor Jackson’s life and legacy.
Jackson Jr. argued that his father’s work was not defined by political institutions but by his commitment to “marginalized communities.”
“He maintained a tense relationship with the political order, not because the presidents were white or black, but the demands of our message, the demands of speaking for the least of these — those who are disinherited, the damned, the dispossessed, the disrespected — demanded not Democratic or Republican solutions, but demanded a consistent, prophetic voice that at no point in time sold us out as a people,” he said.
The memorial events in Chicago drew many prominent political and civil rights figures. Among those attending were former Vice President Kamala Harris, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, civil rights activist Al Sharpton and California governor Gavin Newsom.
Jackson, who died at age 84 on February 17 at his home in Chicago, was a central figure in the American civil rights movement, a two-time Democratic presidential candidate and founder of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition.
Ahead of the memorial services, Jackson Jr. had urged attendees to avoid politicizing the events. Speaking at a press conference shortly after his father’s death, he asked those attending to focus on honoring Jackson’s life rather than advancing partisan arguments.
“Do not bring your politics out of respect to Rev. Jesse Jackson, and the life that he lived, to these ongoing services. Come respectful, and come to say thank you,” Jackson Jr. said at the time. “But these ongoing services are welcome to ALL—Democrat, Republican, liberal, and conservative. Right-wing, left-wing. Because his life is broad enough to cover the full spectrum of what it means to be an American.”
During his remarks, Obama condemned the current political climate, saying that “every day we wake up to some new assault on our democratic institutions.”
Biden, who also spoke at the service, reflected on his childhood experiences with a speech impediment, joking to the audience he was “a hell of a lot smarter than most of you” while discussing how stuttering is often mistaken for a lack of intelligence.
Clinton’s remarks focused largely on his personal relationship with Jackson, describing him as a friend and recalling conversations the two had during Clinton’s presidency, including during the period of his impeachment.
