WASHINGTON — One day after suspending his campaign for California governor, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) announced he will resign from Congress following multiple allegations of sexual assault and misconduct.

The controversy exploded after reports from the San Francisco Chronicle and CNN detailed accusations from several women, including a former staffer who alleged Swalwell sexually assaulted her on more than one occasion.
The former staffer said the alleged assaults occurred twice — once in 2019 and again in April 2024 in New York City. She claimed she was too intoxicated to consent during both incidents.
Three other women accused Swalwell of sending unsolicited nude photos, explicit videos, and sexually suggestive messages.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has opened a criminal investigation into the alleged 2024 incident. The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office is also reviewing the 2019 claims.
The House Ethics Committee announced Monday it will investigate whether Swalwell violated the Code of Official Conduct or any laws related to sexual misconduct involving employees.
Swalwell has denied the sexual assault allegations, calling them “false” and “categorical lies.” However, he issued a public apology to his family for what he described as “mistakes in judgment” in his past.
