A senior Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official has been placed on administrative leave following allegations related to her personal conduct, including claims of financial impropriety, drug use, and involvement in a so-called “sugar daddy” relationship. According to a DHS official the situation has prompted an investigation, though the specific details of the probe have not been officially confirmed.
The official at the center of the allegations, Julia Varvaro, 29, serves as a deputy assistant secretary for counterterrorism. The inquiry was reportedly initiated after a formal complaint was filed and subsequently brought to wider attention through media reporting.

🇺🇸 DHS Counterterrorism Official Julia Varvaro Under Investigation Over 'Sugar Daddy' Complaint

The complaint stems largely from accusations made by a man identified as “Robert,” who described himself as a former romantic partner. He alleged that during a three-month relationship that began on the dating app Hinge, he spent approximately $40,000 on travel, luxury goods, and other expenses. According to his account, the relationship later raised concerns when he discovered a profile allegedly linked to Varvaro on the website Seeking, which promotes relationships between younger women and older affluent men described as “mutually beneficial.”

Robert further claimed that the profile, under the name “Alessia,” sought “masculine men.” Varvaro has firmly denied these allegations, characterizing the situation as a dispute with a former partner. In an interview, she described it as a “mad ex-boyfriend putting crap together” and added, “I didn’t know it was bad to go on vacation with your boyfriend.”
Additional claims in the complaint include allegations of lavish travel to destinations such as Aruba, Italy, and Switzerland, as well as the purchase of high-end items including a $3,500 designer handbag and visits to luxury retailers. Robert also alleged that Varvaro referenced her government position during travel, including expedited airport security screening, and claimed she could arrange VIP access to the Winter Olympics. Varvaro acknowledged being expedited through airport security but denied misusing her position or making such claims.
The complaint also raised concerns about alleged drug use, including marijuana and recreational Xanax. Varvaro denied using marijuana and did not confirm the other allegations.
Robert’s formal complaint to the DHS Office of Inspector General suggested that Varvaro may be under financial stress and argued that her alleged conduct could present a national security concern. However, a spokesperson for the inspector general’s office stated that it maintains “a longstanding policy neither to confirm nor to deny the existence of any specific investigation,” declining further comment.
The controversy emerges amid broader scrutiny of DHS leadership and conduct, following other recent allegations involving current and former officials. While those matters are separate, the timing has drawn additional attention to internal oversight and accountability within the agency.
At this stage, the claims against Varvaro remain allegations, and no formal findings have been publicly released. The outcome of any investigation, if confirmed, could have implications for both the individual involved and broader departmental policies regarding conduct and security clearances.
Requests for comment from related organizations mentioned in reporting were not immediately returned.
As the situation develops, officials have provided limited public information, leaving many details unresolved pending any official findings or statements.
