Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) has made it clear: Democrats refused to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) unless immigration enforcement changes were included — directly tying her party to the ongoing government shutdown.
Speaking at a town hall in Spring Lake Park, Minnesota, Omar said Democrats insisted on a list of reforms tied to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) before backing any appropriations bill.
“As many of you know, Democrats said we are not going to pass the appropriations bill for the Department of Homeland Security unless they agreed to 10 reforms,” Omar said.
She cited proposals such as requiring ICE agents to remove face coverings while operating in communities.
The funding impasse has left DHS functions strained, extending beyond immigration agencies.
“The department doesn’t have the resources to be able to pay for not just ICE and CBP, but they don’t have the resources to pay for TSA agents,” Omar acknowledged.
She added that the Coast Guard and cybersecurity personnel have also been affected.
“So far, Republicans and the president have refused to agree to any of those reforms,” she said, framing the deadlock — amid elevated terror concerns — as the result of Democrats’ continued insistence on those changes.
Her remarks come as the broader political dispute over DHS funding continues to intensify.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) claimed Democrats support funding most DHS functions but oppose continuing funding for ICE without reforms.
“We should fund TSA, fund FEMA, fund the Coast Guard, fund our cybersecurity professionals,” Jeffries told MS NOW earlier this week.
President Donald Trump has taken a different approach, backing efforts to fund immigration enforcement through the budget reconciliation process, which would allow Republicans to bypass Democratic opposition.
As you probably expect, Trump didn’t hold back:
“Unlike Republicans, Democrats want to DEFUND the Police, Border Patrol and all Immigration Enforcement.”
“They want to allow Criminals, the Mentally Insane and Lunatics from all over the World to come into our Country, totally unvetted and unchecked.”
The president continued, writing on social media that Republicans would move forward without Democratic support and work with congressional leadership to push funding through.
“That’s why we are going forward to fund our incredible ICE Agents and Border Patrol through a process that doesn’t need Radical Left Democrat votes.”
Republican leaders in Congress have indicated they plan to pursue that strategy, advancing DHS funding on separate tracks for general operations and immigration enforcement.

The left ( libs ) say that they will allow terrorists ( not in those words, but the result is the same ) into the country so that they can get the so-called ‘reforms’ that they want!
And the illegal votes that they want.
Is that REALLY what they are being paid for ( by OUR taxes )?
