Tom Kean Jr. is under a doctor’s care as questions continue mounting over his prolonged absence from Congress, according to comments made by his father, former New Jersey Gov. Tom Kean Sr.
Kean Jr., 57, has not cast a House vote since March 5 and has remained out of public view for more than two months, with no recent public appearances or newly released photographs emerging during a competitive reelection campaign. The absence has fueled growing concern among Republicans given the GOP’s razor-thin majority in the House.
Speaking to CNN, Kean Sr. described his son’s condition as a “serious but temporary illness” and said multiple doctors believe he is expected to make a full recovery. “He’s hopefully coming back soon and he’s under the care of a doctor,” Kean Sr. said.
Kean’s office has offered few specifics beyond describing the issue as a “personal medical matter,” though the congressman previously said doctors assured him he would return to work “very soon.”
Kean’s chief of staff cited a personal health condition and said he would return soon, but responded to questions about visibility with the quote “There’s no cameras where Tom is.”
NYT: “He’s dealing with a personal heath condition, and he’ll be back soon”, Rep. Tom Kean’s chief of staff Dan Scharfenberger said in an interview.

When pressed on the nature of the health condition and why Kean had not been seen in New Jersey or in Washington, Scharfenberger… https://t.co/LK1ewZ9uPd pic.twitter.com/aPzQp9wN6x
The absence has become politically significant because Kean represents New Jersey’s highly competitive 7th Congressional District, one of the GOP’s most vulnerable seats ahead of the 2026 midterms. Reports indicate even senior Republican leadership figures have privately expressed frustration over the lack of information surrounding his condition and timeline for returning to Capitol Hill.
