New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill announced Thursday that her administration will dramatically increase taxpayer funding for programs that assist illegal immigrants facing deportation, drawing swift criticism from conservatives who argue the state should prioritize its own struggling citizens.

Sherrill revealed that New Jersey will add another $12 million to the state’s Detention Deportation Defense Initiative, bringing total funding for the program to $20.2 million.

The governor also unveiled a new Rapid Legal Response Initiative, which she said is intended to expand the state’s ability to provide emergency immigration-related legal assistance.

“These actions will help ensure more people in New Jersey’s communities receive due process under the law and more New Jersey attorneys are mobilized to stand up for the fundamental human rights of detainees and their families,” she said.

The announcement follows heightened tensions over immigration enforcement in New Jersey following weeks of protests and clashes outside the Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark.

The facility has become a flashpoint in the national immigration debate, with activists staging demonstrations against federal detention and deportation operations.

In recent days, state police joined federal authorities in responding to unrest near the facility. Demonstrators formed human blockades at entrances and exits, disrupting operations and preventing agents from accessing the site. Federal officials have also announced arrests connected to the protests.

Some detainees housed inside the facility have reportedly participated in a hunger strike.

Critics question whether taxpayers should be footing the bill for such programs, particularly as New Jersey continues to grapple with budget pressures, high property taxes, and affordability concerns.

Fox News contributor and OutKick host Tomi Lahren blasted the governor’s decision on social media.

“Once again, using the tax dollars of Americans to benefit illegals,” Lahren wrote. “At least Democrats are finally admitting it. Shameless traitors. All of you.”

New Jersey Assemblyman Gerry Scharfenberger also criticized the decision, arguing that state resources are being diverted away from Americans.

“The governor spending over $20 million for a defense fund for illegal aliens is outrageous at a time when the budget is a disaster and the residents of New Jersey are struggling with one of the highest tax burdens in the nation,” Scharfenberger said.

The debate highlights a broader divide between Democratic and Republican approaches to immigration enforcement. While Democrats frequently emphasize protections and “due process” for migrants facing deportation, Republicans have increasingly argued for a law and order approach that emphasizes broad and efficient enforcement.

The timing of the announcement is also likely to intensify political scrutiny. With immigration remaining one of the most contentious issues in national politics, Sherrill’s decision effectively ensures that New Jersey will remain squarely at the center of the ongoing debate.
