Six House Republicans broke with GOP leadership on Wednesday, joining Democrats to advance legislation that would provide billions of dollars in additional support to Ukraine despite ongoing opposition from President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson.

The House voted 218-204 in favor of a discharge petition that forces consideration of the Ukraine Support Act, a measure that had remained stalled for more than a year after Republican leaders declined to bring it to the floor.

The vote marks one of the most significant bipartisan challenges to Republican leadership on foreign.

The House of Representatives passed a bill earlier today to ensure the legality of contraceptives nationwide. The Right to Contraception Act passed mostly along party lines. It now faces an uncertain future in the 50-50 Senate.

The proposal follows the Dobbs ruling, which Democrats say will lead to the Supreme Court overturning other landmark decisions.

Eight Republicans joined every Democrat in support of the bill, as The Hill reports:

GOP “yes” votes came from Reps. Liz Cheney (Wyo.), Brian Fitzpatrick (Pa.), Anthony Gonzalez (Ohio), John Katko (N.Y.), Adam Kinzinger (Ill.), Nancy Mace (S.C.), Maria Elvira Salazar (Fla.) and Fred Upton (Mich.). Reps. Bob Gibbs (R-Ohio) and Mike Kelly (R-Pa.) voted present. Six Republicans did not vote.

Contraceptives protected under the legislation include oral and emergency medications, intrauterine devices and condoms.

Rep. Kathy Manning (D-N.C.) introduced the legislation last week as a direct response to the Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 landmark case that made access to abortion a constitutional right.

Fox News notes that while Democrats try to motivate sympathetic voters, leading House Republicans have a different take on today’s bill — which they’re calling a political stunt.

“If we allow the majority to undermine constitutional safeguards for an imagined and fake emergency, they will create more imagined emergencies in the future to violate and undermine our constitutional principles,” said Rep. Claudia Tenney, R-N.Y.

This will be found to be unconstitutional. There is nothing in the Constitution that guarantees anyone the right to contraception.

I don’t think anyone is for banning contraception, but isn’t this a state, not a federal, issue?

I’m fairly certain that the practice of medicine is regulated by state governments. The FDA is only involved in drug regulation because drugs are sold across state lines. But the practice of prescribing drugs is regulated by the states, as is licensing of medical practitioners.

The left really and truly wants a bloated central government that micromanages the lives of every citizen. The Constitution does not matter to them.

To me this is stupid. If you’re anti abortion, why would you pass a bill on contraception. Contraception tis supposed to stop unwanted pregnancy, and therefore no need for an abortion. Sounds like something to stir people up, when it is totally unnecessary.

What makes the Democrats/Leftist Crazies think that contraception was even at risk? They don’t seem to realize that the Conservatives/Republicans don’t really want to deal with any more “Liberals from birth” than necessary. The Republicans just don’t want Liberals/Radicals using abortion as another form of “birth control.” Abortion is a medical procedure that should only be used in extreme, rare, emergency cases. It should not be the “go to” choice just because you forgot to take your pill for a couple of nights in a row or because it was raining out and your enthusiastic date couldn’t be bothered to get dressed and run down to the corner drug or convenience store because he didn’t think he had a snowball’s chance of getting lucky that night. Guess he wasn’t so lucky after all, was he?

This sounds like another instance of the Democrats legislating a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist. Instead, they should be telling their constituents to take responsibility for their own actions. “My body, my choice,” should be a motto before the clothes come off, not several months later.

    Don

I can’t remember a time when contraceptives weren’t legal so this is just more stupidity from the left.

As usual the Federal Government is sticking their nose into issues they have no business addressing. This is an issue that should be handled at the State level and Congress should not be meddling in.
