WASHINGTON — Katie Miller, the wife of White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, publicly criticized Gen. Christopher “C.D.” Donahue on X after reports emerged that the four-star Army general will retire next week amid Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s ongoing restructuring of the Pentagon’s senior leadership.

Donahue, commander of U.S. Army Europe and Africa, is expected to retire July 2 after reports that he clashed with Pentagon leadership during Hegseth’s effort to reshape the military’s top ranks.

While the Pentagon has not publicly detailed the circumstances surrounding Donahue’s departure, multiple media outlets have reported that disagreements over force posture in Europe and broader policy issues preceded his retirement.

The announcement marks one of the highest-profile departures during Hegseth’s campaign to reorganize senior military leadership.

Katie Miller Questions Donahue’s Retirement

The controversy began after The Atlantic reported that Donahue would retire unexpectedly next week.

Responding on X, Miller suggested the general was seeking publicity rather than quietly ending his military career.

“When a general becomes the story — leaking details of his retirement to seek the spotlight — he is no longer serving his country but his own ego,” Miller wrote.

Miller also questioned why The Atlantic first reported the story, drawing comparisons to former Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley.

“It should be very suspect that news of his retirement first leaked to The Atlantic — General Milley’s preferred outlet of choice,” she wrote.

She later mocked descriptions of Donahue as one of the Army’s “rising stars.”

“How is he a ‘rising star’ as a 4-star general? There’s literally no stars left.”

There is no public evidence that Donahue or anyone acting on his behalf leaked news of his retirement. The story was first reported by investigative journalists at The Atlantic and later confirmed by defense officials speaking anonymously to multiple news organizations.

Distinguished Military Career

Donahue is widely regarded within military circles as one of the Army’s most experienced special operations commanders.

His military career includes:

  • Service in the elite 75th Ranger Regiment.
  • More than 16 years in U.S. Army Special Operations Command.
  • More than 20 combat deployments.
  • Command of the 82nd Airborne Division.
  • Leadership of XVIII Airborne Corps from 2022 to 2024.
  • Command of U.S. Army Europe and Africa.

Donahue became nationally recognized on Aug. 30, 2021, when he was photographed as the final American service member to board a U.S. military aircraft departing Kabul, marking the end of the U.S. military mission in Afghanistan.

More recently, he has overseen Army operations across Europe and Africa, including NATO coordination and support for Ukraine following Russia’s invasion.

Pentagon Restructuring Continues

Donahue’s retirement comes as Hegseth continues a sweeping overhaul of senior military leadership.

Since taking office, the defense secretary has removed or replaced several top military leaders, including former Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr., former Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Lisa Franchetti, former Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George, and other senior commanders.

Hegseth has argued the changes are intended to streamline Pentagon leadership, reduce bureaucracy, eliminate Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives, and restore what he has called a stronger “warrior ethos.”

Critics, however, argue the restructuring risks sidelining experienced military leaders and reducing independent voices within the Pentagon.

Reports indicated Donahue’s retirement followed disagreements with Pentagon leadership over European troop deployments and coincided with plans to downgrade his command from a four-star to a three-star position.

Military Officials Praise Donahue

Following news of his retirement, several former military and national security officials praised Donahue’s record.

Former White House and National Security Council official Brett McGurk, who served under both Republican and Democratic administrations, called Donahue one of the most influential military commanders of his generation.

“There are few people more responsible for the defeat of ISIS than Chris Donahue,” McGurk wrote, adding that the general ranks “among the most consequential commanders of his generation.”

Other former military leaders highlighted Donahue’s combat record, leadership within the special operations community, and his role strengthening NATO’s eastern defenses.

Debate Continues Over Pentagon Changes

Donahue’s retirement has become another focal point in the broader debate surrounding Hegseth’s effort to reshape the Defense Department.

Supporters of the administration argue the Pentagon has become overly bureaucratic and that leadership changes are necessary to improve military readiness and accountability.

Critics contend the overhaul is removing highly experienced commanders during a period of growing global instability.

The Army has confirmed that July 2 will be Donahue’s final day on active duty. Maj. Gen. Christopher Norrie is expected to assume command on an interim basis while the Pentagon determines a permanent replacement.
