Former Florida Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum was arrested last week in Alabama on multiple drug-related charges, marking the latest legal setback for the onetime rising star of the Democratic Party.
Online jail records show Gillum was taken into custody Thursday night by the Daphne Police Department in Daphne, Alabama, before being booked into the Baldwin County Jail. He faces charges of possession of dangerous drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of marijuana.

Authorities have not released additional details about what led to the arrest, and the Daphne Police Department has not publicly described the evidence supporting the charges or the circumstances surrounding the investigation.
Arrest Details Remain Limited
According to Baldwin County Jail records, Gillum was arrested Thursday evening and booked on three misdemeanor drug-related charges.
Law enforcement officials have so far declined to provide additional information about the incident, leaving many questions unanswered about where the alleged offenses occurred and what prompted officers to take Gillum into custody.
The case remains pending.
Latest Incident Follows 2020 Miami Beach Investigation
Gillum’s arrest comes more than six years after a widely publicized 2020 incident at a Miami Beach hotel that drew national attention.
Police and paramedics responded to the Mondrian Hotel after a 911 caller reported concern that another man staying with Gillum had suffered a possible overdose. When first responders entered the room, they found Gillum and another man appearing dazed and disoriented.
Body camera footage later released by police showed several prescription pill bottles inside the room. Investigators also recovered three small bags containing methamphetamine.
Despite the discovery, prosecutors declined to file criminal charges. Authorities said they lacked sufficient evidence to establish that either Gillum or the other man possessed the methamphetamine because it was not found on either individual.
While the incident generated extensive media coverage, it did not result in a criminal conviction or formal charges.
From Democratic Rising Star to Legal Troubles
Gillum became one of the Democratic Party’s most prominent young figures after winning the party’s nomination for Florida governor in 2018.
The former Tallahassee mayor faced Republican Ron DeSantis in one of the nation’s closest gubernatorial contests that year. DeSantis ultimately prevailed by roughly 30,000 votes, a victory that helped launch his national political profile while ending Gillum’s bid to become Florida’s first Black governor.
Before running statewide, Gillum served as mayor of Tallahassee from 2014 through 2018, building a reputation as one of the Democratic Party’s emerging leaders.
Investigation Continues
Officials have not announced whether additional charges could be filed or released information identifying the “dangerous drugs” referenced in the booking records.
As of Tuesday, the Daphne Police Department had not issued a detailed statement about the arrest, and online jail records remained the primary source of publicly available information.
Gillum’s case remains pending as Alabama authorities continue their investigation.
