WASHINGTON — A neighbor of Sen. Mitch McConnell says the Kentucky Republican’s Capitol Hill residence has remained unusually quiet since the longtime lawmaker was hospitalized last month, adding another layer to ongoing questions about McConnell’s health as his office continues to release only limited updates.

McConnell, 84, has not been seen publicly since June 14, when he was admitted to a Washington hospital after emergency responders were dispatched to his home for an unconscious person. Dispatch audio reviewed by multiple news organizations indicated CPR was in progress during the response, though McConnell’s office has not confirmed his diagnosis.

Neighbor Describes Little Activity

According to a neighbor interviewed by The Daily Beast, there has been little visible activity at McConnell’s Capitol Hill residence since the senator was hospitalized.

The neighbor said no visitors have been seen entering or leaving the home in recent weeks, including McConnell’s wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao. The neighbor also noted that Capitol Police officers who are typically stationed outside the residence have instead been seen at the hospital where McConnell remains.

The observations have fueled additional speculation about the senator’s condition, though they do not establish his medical status.

Office Continues To Release Few Details

McConnell’s office has repeatedly said only that the senator is recovering and remains engaged with Senate business while Congress is in recess.

Last week, spokesman David Popp said McConnell “continues to improve” and is working closely with staff on Senate and Kentucky matters. The office has not disclosed whether he remains hospitalized, the nature of his illness or when he is expected to return to Capitol Hill.

Serious Medical Emergency Confirmed

While aides have declined to discuss specifics, emergency dispatch records have shed new light on the severity of McConnell’s medical emergency.

Audio from June 14 shows emergency personnel responding to reports of an unconscious person at the senator’s Washington home. Dispatchers later referenced a cardiac arrest, and a responding medic reported “CPR in progress.” McConnell’s office has not confirmed whether he suffered a heart attack or another medical event.

Speculation Continues To Grow

The lack of detailed information has prompted widespread speculation online about McConnell’s condition, including claims that have not been substantiated by his office or any medical providers.

Public officials and news organizations have cautioned that many of the rumors circulating on social media remain unverified. McConnell’s aides have continued to characterize his condition as improving while declining to answer questions about his prognosis.

Senate Return Remains Unclear

The Senate is scheduled to return from its recess later this month, but McConnell’s office has not said whether he will be able to resume his duties by then.

The former Senate Republican leader previously announced he will not seek another term and is scheduled to retire when his current term expires in January 2027.

Until additional information is released, questions surrounding McConnell’s health are likely to persist as colleagues and constituents await a clearer picture of his recovery.
