Democratic Socialists Of America Reportedly Preparing Overhaul Targeting Senate, Presidency & Supreme Court

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), the nation’s largest socialist political organization, is reportedly preparing to unveil a dramatically expanded policy platform that would fundamentally reshape the structure of the United States government, including eliminating the Senate and replacing both the presidency and Supreme Court with institutions subordinate to Congress.

According to a source familiar with the organization’s planning, the updated long-term platform is expected to be released next week and reflects the growing confidence of a movement that has recently scored a string of high-profile electoral victories across the country.

Among the proposed changes are abolishing the United States Senate entirely, replacing the president with an executive selected by Congress, and replacing the Supreme Court with a judiciary likewise chosen by and accountable to Congress.

The proposed platform would also call for amnesty for all illegal immigrants and the defunding of the Department of War.

A Vision for a New Government

The reported changes build upon the DSA’s existing platform, which already calls for an “immediate end to all deportations,” unrestricted migration across national borders, and extending voting rights to noncitizens as well as felons.

The organization’s current governing program also advocates replacing America’s constitutional system with what it describes as a “new democratic constitution” built around a single federal legislature operating under proportional representation.

Under that model, Congress would become the dominant branch of government, replacing the country’s longstanding system of checks and balances between the legislative, executive and judicial branches.

Socialist Candidates Gain Momentum

The reported platform update comes as Democratic Socialists have enjoyed a series of notable political victories, fueling speculation that the movement is becoming increasingly influential within the Democratic Party.

While the DSA has long backed progressive lawmakers such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., its most prominent recent success has been New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist who became a citizen in 2018, vaulted into the national spotlight after defeating former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in New York City’s mayoral race.

The organization has continued to build on that momentum in recent months.

DSA-backed candidates Melat Kiros in Colorado and Darializa Avila-Chevalier in New York both defeated incumbent Democratic members of Congress in recent primaries, reinforcing the group’s growing influence within progressive politics.

Following those victories, the organization declared that “only socialism can solve decades of capitalist mismanagement in the U.S.,” adding that its elected officials would fight “for the working class—not for crumbs.”

The reported constitutional proposals are only part of the DSA’s broader political agenda.

Its existing platform calls for a 32-hour workweek with no reduction in pay or benefits, Medicare for All, universal rent control, cancellation of all student loan debt, and eliminating cash bail.

Growing Debate Within the Democratic Party

The DSA’s electoral gains have intensified debate over the future direction of the Democratic Party.

Although most Democratic officeholders are not members of the organization, several of its endorsed candidates have successfully challenged establishment Democrats in recent election cycles, prompting supporters to argue the movement represents the party’s future while critics warn it is pushing Democrats toward increasingly radical positions.

The organization itself has often described its mission as building a “working-class alternative to the Democratic Party,” even as many of its candidates continue to run in Democratic primaries rather than under a separate party label.
