Former Trump White House counsel Pat Cipollone finds himself on the receiving end of a subpoena from a federal grand jury today. The development is the latest in the Justice Department’s investigation into the U.S. Capitol attack and efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
The subpoena follows last month’s testimony from ex-Mark Meadows aide Cassidy Hutchinson before the Jan. 6 committee where Hutchinson said Cipollone repeatedly raised legal concerns about Trump’s activities in the days leading up to and during the Capitol riot. Cipollone’s attorneys are expected to negotiate with prosecutors over his potential appearance.

The move to subpoena Cipollone signals an even more dramatic escalation in the Justice Department’s investigation of the Jan. 6 attack than previously known, following appearances by senior members of former Vice President Mike Pence’s staff before the grand jury two weeks ago.
Officials with the Justice Department declined to comment when contacted by ABC News.
Cipollone appeared before the Jan. 6 committee last month in a closed-door meeting after its members said he would have additional information about a scheme to create false slates of electors to subvert the Electoral College. (RELATED: Trump White House Counsel to Testify Before Jan. 6 Committee)
Although promoted by a faction within President Trump’s inner circle and a cadre of sympathetic lawyers, the plot was deemed illegal by Trump’s White House Counsel Office.
When asked during his appearance before the Jan. 6 committee if he agreed there wasn’t evidence of sufficient fraud to overturn the 2020 presidential election results, Cipollone responded, “Yes, I agree with that.”

In videotaped testimony before the Jan. 6 committee, Cipollone made it clear that he wanted Trump to intervene sooner while the attack was underway.
“I was pretty clear there needed to be an immediate and forceful response, statement, public statement, that people need to leave the Capitol now,” Cipollone said.

Please stop credentializing their use of the phrase “ to overturn an election”. It was not to overturn an election. It was to uncover any fraud.

I would appear and testify. And then in response to particularly nasty questions I would play with them the same cunning word games that they play with conservatives. This should read “The attempt to stop the steal of the most fraudulent election ever” They just keep everyone distracted with all of this intimidation, threats, and propaganda and when the GOP gets back in power these same people have to be held accountable.
