The logistics behind any invasion, especially an amphibious one, are daunting. Operation Overlord required dropping off the equivalent of every man, woman and child in the cities of Green Bay, Wisconsin and Wilmington, Delaware in the first 24 hours onto the beaches of Normandy across a 100 miles stretch of the notoriously choppy English Channel.
An invasion of Taiwan by communist China would involve similar distances and headaches. But Beijing might have an ace up its sleeve: The People’s Liberation Army Navy Marine Corps or PLANMC — which has doubled in size in the last five years.
As 19FortyFive reports:
In 2017, as part of a sweeping reorganization of the Chinese military, the PLANMC was expanded to comprise more than 30,000 personnel in six marine brigades. These were supported by new Aviation and Special Forces brigades.
However, even this expanded Marine Corps only supplements the Ground Force’s six amphibious combined-arms brigades, which field twice as many heavy mechanized battalions, and more fire support. The Navy Marine brigades focus on a more diverse set of skills for varied missions, including anti-piracy and crisis-response roles across the Pacific and Indian oceans. For example, a marine battalion is stationed at China’s only oversea military base in Djibouti, and this will likely feature in future People’s Liberation Army Navy, or PLAN, amphibious strike groups built around Type 071 and 075 amphibious carriers. Notably, Chinese action movie Operation Red Sea imagines Chinese marines rescuing foreign nationals from a Middle Eastern country.

The new standard PLANMC brigade has two Amphibious Mechanized battalions, each with 56 ZBD-05 tracked amphibious carriers and ZTD-5 assault guns that can swim from ship to shore at an extraordinary 18 miles per hour. (For comparison, U.S. Marine Corps AAV-7 carriers max out at 8 mph on water.) The ZBDs are armed with rapid-firing 30-millimeter cannons and two HJ-73C anti-tank missiles — they can carry eight infantrymen. The ZTD-5s have 105 millimeter guns effective against tanks and strongpoints.

China could take Taiwan and it would all be over with before the US even knew what was happening. The only way that could change is if the US Navy sailed in the waters around Taiwan and the fighter planes from the flat tops fly around the clock overhead. Of course all that could also force a war between China and us. Not a very pleasant thought because China, like Russia with Ukraine, could very well turn to throwing nuclear weapons around. Not a real good thing to happen is it?
China has some very very weak points in their infrastructure which will be knocked out quickly to China’s huge detriment. No need for nukes on these either.
