House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) plans to campaign against the $1.7 trillion omnibus spending bill that Senate Republicans negotiated with Democrats.
Rep. McCarthy is reportedly planning to break with Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) during a lunch meeting Wednesday, just a day after Senate leaders agreed to the omnibus, according to Punchbowl News.
Congress is expected to give a final vote on the package later on Wednesday.
Some House Republicans like Rep. Dan Bishop (N.C.) have criticized specific aspects of the bill aside from its eye-popping $1.7 trillion price tag. The North Carolina Congressman pointed to what he called a “sinister” portion of the bill that allots nearly $600 million to encourage “family planning” in places where human population growth threatens animal biodiversity.
“Malthusianism is a disturbing, anti-human ideology that should have ZERO place in any federal program,” Bishop wrote on Twitter.
On Wednesday, Rep. Chip Roy along with several Republican lawmakers signed a letter pledging to oppose any legislation proposed by those who vote to support the omnibus bill once Republicans take the majority in Congress in January.
“Agreed. Except no need to whip—when I’m Speaker, their bills will be dead on arrival in the House if this nearly $2T monstrosity is allowed to move forward over our objections and the will of the American people.” Rep. McCarthy said while retweeting the letter.
