While the Kremlin warns of a “painful” response to sanctions against Russia and members of Vladimir Putin’s inner circle, Ukraine has declared a state of emergency.
The dramatic moves by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Ukraine’s parliament come as Russian forces move blood supplies to the Ukraine border, to seemingly treat military casualties in case of a full-blown war. (RELATED: Russia Invades Ukrainian Territory, While Zelensky Rules Out Ceding It)

Sanctions appear not to be working. Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called them part of Washington’s ‘ongoing attempts to change Russia’s course,’ and added that the pressure will not prove to be a deterrence.
“There should be no doubt that sanctions will receive a strong response, not necessarily symmetrical, but finely tuned and painful to the American side,” the ministry said on Wednesday.
As Zelenskyy hints at pursuing a nuclear weapons program, Ukraine MPs approved giving permission to civilians to carry firearms and act in self-defense.
CTV News reports:
“The adoption of this law is fully in the interests of the state and society,” the authors of the draft law said in a note, adding that the law was needed due to “existing threats and dangers for the citizens of Ukraine.”
One of Europe’s worst security crises in decades was unfolding after Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized two areas of eastern Ukraine as independent and ordered troops to be deployed to eastern Ukraine.
