The North Carolina State Highway Patrol charged Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-N.C.) on March 3 for driving while his license was revoked.
The misdemeanor charge includes the possibility of a 20 day jail sentence for the 26-year-old congressman, though most offenders are given a fine or probation.
The Charlotte Observer continues:
McClatchy obtained a copy of the citation, which said Cawthorn was very polite and cooperative during the exchange and that the trooper learned that there was “a pickup order” to take Cawthorn’s license.
Knox told McClatchy that he can’t comment on why Cawthorn’s license has been revoked because that information is protected under a federal law, the Driver’s Privacy Protection Act.
Besides the revoked license charge, Cawthorn has two pending speeding citations.
He also recently faced a legal challenge from left-wing activists trying to prevent him from seeking reelection.
That challenge, filed with the North Carolina State Board of Elections, claimed Cawthorn was partially liable for the Jan. 6, 2021 United States Capitol riot.
Last week, Cawthorn won a major legal victory when U.S. District Judge Richard Myers halted the legal challenge to his candidacy.
Cawthorn spoke to News 13 in Asheville about what prompted him to run for reelection in North Carolina’s 11th District after voting maps were redrawn:
Cawthorn is up against 13 candidates, including seven Republicans, in District 11.
“I’ll be a sophomore member of Congress, so that is a big point to take,” Cawthorn said. “Once you’re a sophomore member, you have more seniority, so you can get better placed on committees. You’re capable to push more legislation through because more people owe you favors.”
North Carolina’s primary elections are scheduled for May 17.
