Even New Jersey politicians (historically known for their corruption) say the criminal indictment against Sen. Bob Menendez and his wife, Nadine Arslanian Menendez, reads like a combination of “The Sopranos” and “House of Cards.”
Menedez, New Jersey’s senior United States senator and, until Friday, the head of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee, reportedly Googled “How much is one kilo of gold worth?” after returning from a trip to Egypt in 2021.
Multiple gold bars and nearly $500,000 in cash-stuffed envelopes were found during a search of the couple’s home.
New Jersey developer Fred Daibes and two other Menendez cronies allegedly helped secure the delivery of gold in exchange for Menedez using his clout to secure favors for the Egyptian government.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York alleges this included secretly providing “sensitive U.S. Government information” to aid the Egyptian government.
According to the indictment, Menedez also attempted to influence the U.S. government’s prosecution of Daibes for federal banking crimes.

Menendez and his wife were accused of corruption allegations on Friday, involving the purchase of a luxury car, $400,000 in gold bars and cash, plus payments toward a home mortgage allegedly received by Menendez and his wife.
The indictment claims the couple had an improper relationship with three New Jersey businessmen: Wael Hana, Jose Uribe and Fred Daibes, who allegedly paid the couple in exchange for Menendez to use his influence in Washington D.C. to their benefit.
The couple face three criminal counts each: conspiracy to commit bribery, conspiracy to commit honest services fraud, and conspiracy to commit extortion under color of official right. The three businessmen face charges of conspiracy to commit bribery and conspiracy to commit honest services fraud.
Despite calls for his resignation by his own party, Menendez denies any wrongdoing. In a statement, he vowed to continue his work as senator:
“Those behind this campaign simply cannot accept that a first-generation Latin American from humble beginnings could rise to be a U.S. senator.”
“I have been falsely accused before because I refused to back down to the powers that be and the people of New Jersey were able to see through the smoke and mirrors and recognize I was innocent,” he added.
Menedez, up for reelection next year, has since been nicknamed “Gold Bar Bob” by his Republican opponent, Christine Serrano Glassner.
