Obama’s Delusional Disinformation About His Russia Weakness

ANALYSIS – During a “Disinformation and the Erosion of Democracy” conference at the University of Chicago, former President Barack Obama did his own bit of massive misinforming when he absurdly tried to present himself as tough on Russia.

In remarks to The Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg, he recalled having to “drag” U.S. allies to take action against Russia after it invaded Crimea in 2014.

These comments produced a furious backlash, as Obama’s response to that first Russian invasion of Ukraine was anything but tough.

In fact, Obama’s policies were notoriously weak and ineffective, including his refusal to give Ukraine offensive weapons which President Trump later provided, as even members of his foreign policy team have since admitted.

Obama’s former Director of National Intelligence (DNI), James Clapper, admitted just this week on CNN that Team Obama should’ve been far tougher on Russia in 2014 when they invaded and annexed Crimea.

And as Defense News reported:

A top Pentagon pick for President Joe Biden has criticized the Obama administration’s response to Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea from Ukraine as “too slow and too incremental,” at her confirmation hearing Thursday.

GOP and Democratic members of the Senate Armed Services Committee grilled Celeste Wallander, a senior Russia adviser to President Barack Obama in 2014, on past and future U.S. lethal aid for Ukraine. Wallander, nominated to be assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs, said it was the wrong call not to send weapons to Ukraine.

More specifically, at the disinformation conference, the delusional former president said:

I will say that, as someone who grappled with the incursion into Crimea and the eastern portions of Ukraine, I have been encouraged by the European reaction. Because, in 2014, I often had to drag them kicking and screaming to respond in ways that we would’ve wanted to see, from those of us who describe ourselves as Western democracies.

Obama also defended not arming the Ukrainians during his term because, he said, “we were concerned about making sure that we did not give [Russia] an excuse for another incursion,” and “you had issues of training.”

Max Abrahms, an international security professor at Northeastern University blasted Obama’s answer as “self-serving revisionist history.”
