Stormy Daniels' disgraced ex-attorney, Michael Avenatti, says he is in talks with Donald Trump's legal team and ready to testify on Trump's behalf in his hush money trial.
The onetime Democratic Party rising star argues that the case against the former president is a witch hunt.
“You're talking about conduct that occurred some eight years ago. I think the fact that it's occurring in state court in New York is a mistake. And I think that when you are going to potentially deprive tens of millions of Americans of their choice for the presidency of the United States, whether we agree with those folks or not, or regardless of what we may think of Donald Trump, I think it's a mistake to do it based on a case of this nature,” Avenatti said in a recent interview with MSNBC's Ari Melber. The New York Post continues:
“The defense has contacted me,” Avenatti told The Post in a phone call from Terminal Island, a minimum-security federal prison in Los Angeles where he is currently serving a 19-year sentence for extortion, tax evasion, fraud, embezzlement and other federal crimes.
“I'd be more than happy to testify, I don't know that I will be called to testify, but I have been in touch with Trump's defense for the better part of year,” Avenatti said.
The ex-litigator refused to offer any details about the specifics of his conversations with Team Trump.
A person close to the former president confirmed the ongoing discussions.
In 2022, a jury convicted Avenatti of stealing nearly $300,000 in book advance money from his then-client, Daniels.
A few years ago, many considered him a political force to be reckoned with, one who could win the presidency. (RELATED: A Momentous Political Realignment For 2024?)
Avenatti even used his celebrity in 2018 to publicly call for Trump's indictment in a New York Times op-ed.
