E. Jean Carroll’s lawyer is open to filing a new defamation lawsuit after former President Donald Trump posted a fiery “Happy Memorial Day to All” message that included a lengthy reference to “human scum” in his life. Trump’s message, posted on the eve of the closing arguments in his hush money trial, reiterated a litany of complaints long held by the White House front-runner.
“Happy Memorial Day to All, including the Human Scum that is working so hard to destroy our Once Great Country, & to the Radical Left, Trump Hating Federal Judge in New York that presided over, get this, TWO separate trials, that awarded a woman, who I never met before (a quick handshake at a celebrity event, 25 years ago, doesn’t count!), 91 MILLION DOLLARS for “DEFAMATION,’” he wrote, referencing Carroll.
“[Carroll] didn’t know when the so-called event took place—sometime in the 1990’s—never filed a police report, didn’t have to produce the ‘dress’ that she threatened me with (it showed negative!), & sung my praises in the first half of her CNN Interview with Alison Cooper, but changed her tune in the second half—Gee, I wonder why (UNDER APPEAL!)?”
“The Rape charge was dropped by a jury! Or Arthur Engoron, the N.Y. State Wacko Judge who fined me almost 500 Million Dollars (UNDER APPEAL) for DOING NOTHING WRONG, used a Statute that has never been used before, gave me NO JURY, Mar-a-Lago at $18,000,000 – Now for Merchan!”
Earlier this year, a New York jury found that Trump had defamed Carroll during a CNN town hall. They awarded her $65 million in punitive damages and $18 million in compensatory damages. Trump’s remarks came one day after another jury found him liable for $5 million in damages – $2 million for sexual assault and $3 million for defamation.
The amended complaint, filed by Carroll’s lawyer shortly afterward, read: “Trump’s defamatory statements post-verdict show the depth of his malice toward Carroll since it is hard to imagine defamatory conduct that could possibly be more motivated by hatred, ill will, or spite.”
Robert Kaplan, the lawyer who represented Carroll in her lawsuits for sexual abuse and defamation against the president, responded in a statement posted by journalist Maggie Haberman on X.
“We have said several times since the last jury verdict in January that all options were on the table,” Haberman tweeted.
“And that remains true today – all options are on the table.”
Carroll, a journalist and advice columnist, accused Trump of sexually assaulting her in a Bergdorf Goodman department store in New York City in the mid-1990s. She made the allegations public in a 2019 memoir.
Trump adamantly denied the allegations, claiming he never met Carroll and suggesting her accusations were fabricated to sell books. Carroll subsequently filed a defamation lawsuit against Trump, asserting that his public denials and derogatory comments had damaged her reputation.
