The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that President Joe Biden declined an early evening meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz because he needed to go to bed.
German officials, fully aware of Biden's tendency to tire in the evenings, made efforts to accommodate his schedule. They proposed an informal, confidential discussion about Ukraine in a relaxed setting. Despite their best efforts, Biden skipped the meeting.
The revealing incident didn't occur at the ongoing NATO conference in Washington, D.C., but at the 2022 G7 summit.
Business Insider further reports on the leaked details, which the administration is trying to deny:
Two unnamed people who were there told the Journal that Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that Biden would not make an appearance because he had to rest.
According to the report, the chancellor and his aides were surprised by Biden's absence and Blinken's appearance.
In a statement to the Journal, a spokesperson for the State Department denied the report, while another official stated that the White House had informed the participants early on that Biden would be unable to attend.
Last month, White House staffers attempting to reassure the public told Axios that Biden is “dependably engaged” from 10 am to 4 pm but can struggle outside of that window.
Both CNN and The New York Times have reported that Biden told governors he needed to get more sleep and stop holding events after 8 p.m. The White House has not responded to these claims.
Despite Biden's conspicuous absence and frequent verbal gaffes, Chancellor Scholz has expressed no concerns about President Biden's fitness. On his way to the NATO summit in Washington yesterday, Scholz claimed to be confident in Biden's capabilities and readiness to serve as president of the United States.
