NBC News reports that President Joe Biden’s family is considering nudging him to pack it up and step out of the 2024 presidential race. The Biden brigade is considering this previously unthinkable pivot due to concerns about the president’s health, the family’s well-being and the nation’s stability (from their perspective).
Family First: Who’s in on the Discussions?
First lady Jill Biden, son Hunter and the president’s sister, Valerie Owens, are reportedly contemplating an exit strategy. Of course, they’re also considering how to best help the Democratic Party stave off another Donald Trump victory.
Predictably, the Biden campaign remains in damage control mode, insisting that the president is still in this fight. White House spokesman Andrew Bates has gone on record, denying any family discussions about Biden’s potential withdrawal.

On MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Friday, Biden campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon acknowledged that the campaign has seen some “slippage,” but she said it’s been “a small movement” and insisted Biden is “absolutely” still in the race.
Ron Klain, Biden’s former White House chief of staff and an adviser to him for decades, said in an interview that Biden is hearing the public and private calls for him to exit the race.
“I think he’s feeling the pressure,” said Klain, who has spoken to Biden recently. “I want him to stay in.”
Klain’s take is that it makes no sense for Biden to be pushed aside. He said some in his party underestimate Trump at their own peril and undervalue the fact that Biden is the only one who has beaten him.
According to NBC, Biden and his inner circle feel betrayed by the growing effort to push him out since the June 27 debate, viewing it as underhanded and disrespectful. An anonymous Biden ally commented, “There was a much more dignified way to do this if this is what they wanted. This is no way to treat a public servant who has done a lot for this country.”
Democratic Bigwigs Weigh In
Nevertheless, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries reportedly had candid conversations with Biden, with Schumer “forcefully” suggesting to Biden that he should call it quits for the sake of the country.
And then there’s former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who supposedly told Biden that not only is his win in November looking grim, but he might also be a roadblock for the Democrats’ dream of reclaiming the House.
Is the Dam Breaking?
More than 30 congressional Democrats have openly called for Biden to bow out, which is over 10% of the Democratic caucuses in the House and Senate. Dissent isn’t just coming from the party elite, as the president complained to Joe Scarborough but from a significant chunk of its rank-and-file members. Interestingly, whispers of Biden’s potential exit increased the day after Trump electrified the Republican National Convention with his speech, officially accepting the party’s nomination. Coincidence? We think not.
