Mesa, Arizona, Mayor John Giles (R) published an op-ed in Arizona's most prominent newspaper on Monday endorsing Kamala Harris for president.
Giles, the chief executive of Arizona's third-largest city, explained in uncompromising terms why he is endorsing a Democrat for president.
Writing in The Arizona Republic, he decried former President Trump's influence on the Republican Party.
“Our party used to stand for the belief that every Arizonan, no matter their background or circumstances, should have the freedom, opportunity, and security to live out their American Dream.”
“But since Donald Trump refused to accept the outcome of the 2020 election, Republicans have yet to course correct,” he added.
A Call to Action for Arizona Republicans?
“In the spirit of the late Sen. John McCain's motto, ‘Country First,' I call on other Arizona Republicans to join me in choosing country over party this election and to vote against Donald Trump.”
Giles argued that the Biden administration was ready to address the southern border crisis, but Trump got congressional Republicans to sabotage the plan for his own benefit.
On other issues, his glowing praise about the Biden administration contrasted sharply with the derision and ridicule shown Trump:
Since 2014, I have had the honor of being mayor of Mesa, the nation's 36th-largest city and one of the most conservative. Under Trump, American cities didn't get the support they deserved. Infrastructure week was made into a joke.
But under the Biden-Harris administration, Mesa has seen historic federal funding for the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, along with investments to make sure our streets and public transit systems benefit from modern technology.
With the CHIPS Act, Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden are delivering thousands of new jobs to Arizonans and helping us grow critical industries.
Giles proceeded to make the case against Trump by invoking the legacies of John McCain and Mark Kelly:
We can choose a future for our children and grandchildren based on decency, respect and morality — or succumb to the crudeness and vulgarity of Trump and JD Vance and the far-right agenda they would champion.
“Arizona leaders like McCain and Sen. Mark Kelly have embodied the commitment to country over party,” he concluded. “And it's that same high caliber of character and leadership I see in Vice President Harris.”

Arizona is a destroyed state where illegals roam and Governor deals with the cartel.Don’t expect Republicans to be normal there
Don’t know what this guy is smoking, but it is sure enough strong stuff. Typical TDS spiel, anyone, no matter how bad, before Trump.
Wow, another RINO backing a Dim, yawn. This dude needs to go. #TrumpVance2024ToSaveAmerica
“In the spirit of the late Sen. John McCain’s motto, ‘Country First,’ ”
So, he chooses a candidate and a party that is constantly putting America and Americans LAST….
You just can’t make this stuff up.
And for the record, John McCain didn’t always put America and Americans First…. McCain’s EGO and his PRIDE of being a “Maverick” in the Republican party HURT America and Americans way too often….
He needs to switch parties….
If this guy wants a democrat president the republicans need to boot him from the party. I am sick and tired of these RINOS blathering on about what they, in their little world, they don’t like. Throw him out of the party. The BIG Tent needs friends in it not this tripe.
Your basic problem is that you think that these people tell the truth. Fact is the 2020 election was stolen and you and millions can’t face that simple fact. So we have a Democratic Party that lies and cheats for maintaining their power. Quite simply they can win unless they cheat. The TRUTH is what they say it is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for you time.
Clearly, his eyes are shut, therefore blind, ears plugged, therefore deaf, he hates his country, therfore a pathetic waste of oxygen.
