Purchasing personal body armor is becoming increasingly common among the “responsible citizen” crowd…and by that, we mean a substantial expansion from the more traditional “prepper” crowd.
Armor for the Citizen
One only has to look at all the laws trying to make body armor illegal for the common citizen (and all the litigation fighting that legislation) to see what a sadly large number of state governments think of armed and armored citizens (like the former H.R. 378, “Responsible Body Armor Possession Act.”)
Normally, decent-quality plates are expensive. This market is definitely one defined by “you get what you pay for.” (Note: in this instance, we’re not referring to the velcro-on “soft armor” concealable vest type things most of us are familiar with; we’re talking about the actual multi-hit capable heavy-duty stuff intended to stop rifle rounds.)
Warlord Industries has made one such armor style available on several of its websites.
The plates we’re talking about here are left over from a run of armor made to fill a contract for the Ukrainian military. Want some specifics? They are 10×12 shooter-cut, multi-curve plates with the exact same specs and certifications as the ones made in the U.S.A. by Chase Tactical (q.v.).
The overrun plates are labeled 4SAS4, but they have the exact same specs and certifications as the extremely popular Chase 4SAS7. The AS7 model was just rebranded for export to Ukraine.
Now, why is that important to you, you ask? Glad you asked!
The difference between those codes and classifications is significant because it differentiates a foreign and a domestic contract. This means they can sell you the same plates for about half the price.
You can purchase a full set (front/back) now for about the same price as you’d have been forced to pay for a single plate before. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, as long as you’re okay with making a choice between protecting chest or spine.
So why not both?
Ukraine Plates Specifically
Chase Tactical’s military contract for NIJ-certified Level 4 plates (or one of them anyway) has been filled, leaving an overrun of several hundred plates. These plates, labeled 4SAM, have identical features to Chase’s 4S7AS4 (see below).

That means you can get a set of high quality, rifle-threat rated, NIJ certified level IV plates for less than what a single plate would normally priced.
