House Ethics Panel Investigates Nancy Mace

The House Ethics Committee has formally announced that its Office of Congressional Conduct (OCC) is investigating Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.). The announcement, made Friday afternoon, confirms that an official ethics review is now underway for the Charleston-area Republican who’s become a staunch supporter of President Trump and is running in a competitive Republican primary for governor.

Though it’s unclear what prompted the probe, scrutiny has followed Mace for years after allegations that she used a congressional lodging reimbursement program while co-owning a $1.6 million townhouse in Washington, D.C. Critics say she may have claimed reimbursements exceeding allowable expenses, and questions have also arisen about how the property was used.

Some reporting noted that the property was allegedly marketed as a short-term rental while she was expensing lodging costs to taxpayers — a point of controversy that helped trigger ethics complaints.

Prior to Friday’s formal action, there were complaints and watchdog calls for reviews of possible ethics violations, including reimbursements and other conduct.

As Mediaite reported, the investigation may also be connected to an incident at Charleston International Airport a little more than a month ago, when Mace was accused of confronting airport police. An internal report alleged that she overreacted to a misunderstanding involving her travel security, creating what it described as a public spectacle, calling officers “f***ing idiots” and “f***ing incompetent.”

Mace has denied the claims and said the report was falsified:

The press release, posted on the committee’s website, noted that Mace, who is running in a crowded GOP primary to be South Carolina’s next governor, was the subject of a matter that had been referred by the OCC on Dec. 2.

“The Committee notes that the mere fact of a referral or an extension, and the mandatory disclosure of such an extension and the name of the subject of the matter, does not itself indicate that any violation has occurred, or reflect any judgment on behalf of the Committee,” the press release noted, adding that it would “announce its course of action in this matter on or before March 2, 2026.”

The OCC evaluates whether members have violated House ethics rules. If it finds “substantial reason to believe” that wrongdoing occurred, it can refer the matter to the full Ethics Committee for further action.

At this stage, no formal penalties or findings of wrongdoing have been issued — the investigation continues.

Mace has previously denied wrongdoing related to ethics concerns and stated that she complies with rules, especially when questioned about reimbursements in media interviews.

She remains a prominent member of the House and is also known for high-profile actions and statements on a wide range of political issues.
