Even if it means going against Trump…
The White House and House Republicans are heading for a collision over the future of the Affordable Care Act’s enhanced subsidies, which expire at the end of the year. Multiple officials familiar with recent conversations say House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) told the administration that most Republicans have little interest in extending the subsidies without major policy changes. According to a report by CBS News:
Johnson delivered the message in a phone call with senior administration officials as President Trump’s advisers were drafting a plan to continue the subsidies for an additional two years. That plan that was initially expected to emerge this week.
The Wall Street Journal first reported Johnson’s warning to the White House regarding the lack of GOP House support for the plan. Any White House health care plan would require overwhelming Republican support in the House to be enacted.

The enhanced subsidies expire at the end of this year, affecting tens of millions who benefit from them. The subsidies were at the heart of the government shutdown funding fight.
Democrats made an extension of the tax credits their central demand to reopen the government, demanding that Republicans negotiate on the issue to secure their votes. But GOP leaders insisted they wouldn’t negotiate until after the shutdown ended. And ultimately, a group of eight Democrats supported a deal to end the shutdown, securing a commitment to vote on the tax credits within a month.
The push against extending subsidies fits long-standing GOP skepticism of the ACA. Still, it carries considerable political risk. Polling shows strong public support for keeping the subsidies, including from some Republican voters. If they lapse, many will face steep premium hikes or risk losing their coverage entirely. Inside the party, Johnson is also responding to pressure from conservatives. Members of the House Freedom Caucus oppose new federal spending on health care subsidies unless accompanied by structural reforms. That stance has not softened even under a Trump White House.

Health Care and Government involvement has been a long series of compromises involving involving media and many attention seekers and not the concerns of citizens paying the cost. I would like to know what percentage of the cost of health care cost is to pay for people having no contact with patients but only pushing papers to conform to rules and regulations and billings. I wonder if it would be less expensive to socialize local hospitals with free health care, streamline care and procedures and leave private medical providers alone to compete for clients.
