Congressional investigators are moving quickly to investigate and expose the political motivations behind the indictment and arrest of former President Donald Trump by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, first formally subpoenaed former New York County Special Assistant District Attorney Mark Pomerantz, demanding he appear before the Committee for a deposition.
“As a special assistant district attorney, Pomerantz led the investigation into President Donald Trump’s finances before resigning in protest after Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s initial reluctance to move forward with charges against President Trump,” the Committee notes in a statement.
The Committee wants to hear from Pomerantz, who earlier made public statements about the investigation they say strongly suggests Bragg’s prosecution of Trump is politically motivated.
They requested Pomerantz’s voluntary cooperation in a letter on March 22, 2023. Pomerantz refused to comply at the direction of the New York County District Attorney’s Office, the Committee reports.
“Pomerantz publicly criticized Bragg for failing to aggressively prosecute President Trump and even wrote a memoir describing his eagerness to investigate President Trump and disclosing internal deliberations about the investigation.
Jordan notes Congress has jurisdiction to intervene in the local prosecution, as the Manhattan DA’s Office acknowledges using federal forfeiture funds in its investigations of Trump.
Jordan also sent a letter to Matthew Colangelo, Senior Counsel to New York County District Attorney’s Office, requesting testimony and documents in regarding Bragg’s prosecution.
“Colangelo, a former Biden Department of Justice official and senior attorney at the New York Attorney General’s Office, has previously taken part in multiple investigations into President Trump and was reportedly hired to “jump start” Bragg’s stalled investigation into President Trump,” the Committee reports.
“You had previously served in senior positions in the U.S. Department of Justice and the New York Attorney General’s Office, both of which had competing investigations related to President Trump. Given your history of working for law-enforcement entities that are pursuing President Trump and the public reporting surrounding your decision to work for the New York County District Attorney’s Office, we request your cooperation with our oversight in your personal capacity,” the Committee informed Colangelo.
Jordan notes how Colangelo was hired to “beef up” Bragg’s prosecution of Trump when Pomerantz left.
“You then moved to a high-level position in the Biden Department of Justice, serving for a time as the Acting Associate Attorney General, before District Attorney Bragg ‘beefed up [his] office’ by hiring you to fill the void left by the departure of disgruntled attorneys Mark Pomerantz and Carey Dunne. Pomerantz left the Office—very publicly—because its investigation into President Trump was not proceeding fast enough for his liking. His public resignation reportedly left District Attorney Bragg ‘deeply stung,’ and caused him to issue an ‘unusual’ public statement ’emphasizing that the investigation into Trump and his business was far from over.’ The circumstances and chain of events that led to your hiring by the New York County District Attorney’s Office could therefore shed substantial light on the underlying motives for that Office’s investigation into and indictment of President Trump,” Jordan writes.
“Congress has a specific and manifestly important interest in preventing politically motivated prosecutions of current and former Presidents by elected state and local prosecutors, particularly in jurisdictions—like New York County—where the prosecutor is popularly elected and trial-level judges lack life tenure,” the Committee adds, noting the threat posed by politically-motivated prosecution.

This is a valiant tilt at a windmill. I do applaud your bulldog tenacity. However, I think we have all learned that Congressional investigations usually turn up squat that is actionable on. And, even if you have a smoking gun, it is evident to everyone that the corruption “cancer” has already diseased the American body so badly, that it is inoperable (both speaking of the system to not be able to function justly, but also, as with cancer in many cases, we can’t take it out. I’m sorry, my friend, and I mean no criticism of you at all. I applaud what you are trying to do, and back you 150%. But, i feel, after all that we have witnessed and continue to witness, working within the system is just no longer going to work to correct the problem.

Does Congress have to power to arrest anyone? It seems that when grilling the head of DOJ and Homeland Security that they lie under oath but nothing is done about it. Everyone knows that the indictment of President Trump is politically motivated but can Congress hold the DA accountable on trumped up charges? LETS GO BRANDON!
