The longtime party leader is defying his party’s generational shift…
Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) announced Thursday that he will run for reelection in the U.S. House of Representatives, seeking another term representing South Carolina’s 6th Congressional District.
The 85-year-old congressman, one of the most influential Democrats in Congress, said he plans to file paperwork to compete for the Democratic nomination later this year following a highly anticipated campaign announcement.

Veteran lawmaker seeking another term
Clyburn has represented South Carolina’s 6th District since first being elected in 1992, building a national profile as a key leader within the Democratic Party and a prominent voice in the Congressional Black Caucus.
For much of the past decade, he served in the party’s leadership as House Majority Whip, effectively the No. 3 Democrat in the chamber. He stepped down from that leadership role in 2023 and later left his position as assistant Democratic leader in 2024.
Bucking retirement trend among senior Democrats
Clyburn’s decision comes as several longtime Democratic leaders have announced plans to retire, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and former Majority Leader Steny Hoyer.
Their departures have fueled a broader push for generational change within the party, with younger candidates increasingly challenging veteran incumbents.
Despite that trend, Clyburn has indicated he still has strong support among constituents and believes his experience remains valuable in Congress.
One of the party’s most influential figures
Clyburn is widely regarded as the most powerful Democrat in South Carolina and one of the most prominent Black political leaders in the United States.
His endorsement of Joe Biden during the 2020 Democratic presidential primary is often credited with helping revive Biden’s campaign after early losses, demonstrating Clyburn’s influence within national politics.
2026 election timeline
If reelected, Clyburn would be serving well into his late 80s and could become the oldest member of Congress if Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley retires.
The Democratic primary for South Carolina’s 6th Congressional District is scheduled for June 9, 2026, with the general election set for Nov. 3, 2026.
For now, the longtime lawmaker appears eager to continue his decades-long career on Capitol Hill as the next election cycle begins to take shape.

This ‘leader’ is a classic example of what is wrong with the current democRAT party – can anyone name a single substantive piece of legislation he has gotten passed? Show me I am wrong about him, I’ll wait.
So Soutn Carolina wants to re-elect an 85 year old senator who for the last three years has said he is essentially retired,,,? Re-elect a Senator who for three years has told his constituents he is retiring, is retired and so doesn’t meet with them, is not available, is taking time off’ ie: on retirement leave. And South Carolinian’s want this re-elected to serve another 7 ears? This is why the Dem’s and RINO’s don’t want voter ID. It’s the only way they can hold these seats, This kind of person only wind election’s and primaries with hundreds of thousands of Mail In Ballots from Dead people
There should be term limits for those in all political positions. There is for the presidency. Eighteen terms is totally ridiculous. Being a public servant should not be a career.
