McCarthy’s Speakership Now Being Tested by Moderates

After members of the House Freedom Caucus pushed his speakership bid to the brink, more moderate Republicans have begun scrutinizing Kevin McCarthy.

Specifically, they’re demanding more details about the rules package deal the speaker struck with his detractors. At least several Republican fear McCarthy ceded far too much power to the so-called hardliners in his caucus.

The Washington Times explains:

Some Republicans in Mr. McCarthy’s slim majority could balk at ambiguous details of his concessions to members of the conservative Freedom Caucus unless more of the backroom negotiations are brought to light.

Among the deals that are known is a measure that weakens the speaker’s power by allowing any one member to force a vote on vacating the chair, a reinstatement of the ability for lawmakers to offer amendments on appropriations bills, a mandated 72-hour window to review legislation before a vote and a promise to vote on a bill to invoke term limits on members of Congress.

“We were trying to stand up for rank-and-file members, because too often … bills are cooked up with a handful of people, they’re brought through to the Rules Committee, jammed through, put on the floor, and you have to vote yes or no,” Rep. Chip Roy, a Texas Republican and defector who ultimately voted for Mr. McCarthy on the final ballot, said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

“My question really is: What backroom deals did they try to cut, and did they get those?” Rep. Nancy Mace, South Carolina Republican, told CBS News.

The moderates are questioning the concessions but they won’t question the democrats and their fast walk to socialism. These people are just garbage. Evil to the core.

Term limits, no more omnibus bills pushed through with 24 hour notice, ability to question the leader’s actions all seem like a good deal to me.

The old rules served chiefly to obfuscate legislative business and allow actions that would otherwise meet with the disapproval of voters. The process of selecting the Speaker was messy, but it did show diversity of thought and demonstrated that some members are determined to advance the expectations of voters. If the R’s are to distinguish themselves from D automatons, they must debate the issues and cultivate the wisdom of the whole not just a few movers and shakers. If this process should also establish some clear objectives (e.g., debt reduction, balanced budget, more review time for complex legislation and preventing bills from being larded up with earmarks, etc.) all the better for public understanding and the spirit of democracy.

The deals are ALL known. The Freedom Caucus is BRAGGING about them.
