Representative Abe Hamadeh (R-AZ) has introduced a resolution aimed at banning the display of non-American flags in the halls of Congress, echoing President Donald Trump’s recently reinstated “One Flag” policy across U.S. embassies. The proposal has quickly garnered attention as part of a broader effort to reaffirm national identity and curb what some see as divisive symbolism within federal institutions.
“President Trump just cleaned up our embassies with the One Flag policy; time we do the same in the People’s House,” said Hamadeh in a press release announcing the resolution.
The measure would prohibit the hanging or display of flags unrelated to official government functions—such as Pride flags, Black Lives Matter banners, or foreign national flags—within the Capitol complex, with narrow exceptions. Permitted flags would include the American flag, flags representing the Armed Forces, state flags displayed by Members at their official offices, flags of federally recognized Native American tribes, and national flags of visiting foreign diplomats. The POW-MIA flag and the U.S. government’s official “wrongful detainee” flag would also be allowed.
Hamadeh, an Army veteran who served as an intelligence officer, emphasized his perspective as someone who once wore the American flag into battle. “As a former U.S. Army Intelligence officer, I proudly bore the American flag on my sleeve while fighting for the right of my colleagues to wave any flag espousing anti-American ideologies they so choose,” he said. “However, the halls of Congress should not be littered with silly symbols of their misguided choices.”
Representative Diana Harshbarger (R-TN), who recently introduced the “One Flag for All Act,” is co-sponsoring Hamadeh’s resolution. She underscored the importance of a unified national image within one of the country’s most visible institutions. “When visitors walk through the hallowed halls of Congress, they shouldn’t be forced to see flags that represent radical ideologies,” Harshbarger said. “This is the people’s house, and there’s only one flag that represents all the citizens of our country.”
The resolution comes amid renewed conservative momentum to reestablish traditional symbols of American identity across public life, a hallmark of Trump’s second-term agenda. Just days into his renewed presidency, Trump reissued his executive order restricting the display of politically symbolic flags at U.S. embassies abroad, reversing Biden-era policies that allowed the flying of Pride flags and other banners.
Earlier this year, Representative Kat Cammack (R-FL) also introduced legislation that would prohibit foreign flags on the House floor, except in narrowly defined contexts such as lapel pins or during special debates. “On the floor of the United States House of Representatives, there should only be one flag on display: ours,” Cammack stated.
The resolution is expected to spark fierce debate in the coming weeks, as Republicans argue for unity and respect for American institutions, while critics are likely to frame the move as a partisan assault on free expression and inclusion.
