Former President Donald Trump has reportedly canceled his planned trip to Capitol Hill this week as House Republicans struggle to elect a new House Speaker.
Sources previously told The Hill that Trump and his team were discussing a possible trip to Capitol Hill amid the debate over the next Speaker.
Fox News had reported Trump was expected to visit Capitol Hill, but on Monday reported that would no longer happen.
Last week, McCarthy was ousted by the votes of eight Republicans and all House Democrats thanks to a rule change McCarthy agreed to when he was elected speaker. (RELATED: Report: McCarthy Will Not Re-run For Speaker)
In the days that followed, a small number of Republicans floated Trump's name for Speaker. However, the former President officially endorsed Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) for Speaker on Friday.
In an early-morning post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said Jordan had his “complete” and “total” endorsement. “He will be a GREAT Speaker of the House,” Trump posted. ” … He is STRONG on Crime, Borders, our Military/Vets, & 2nd Amendment.”
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) is also pursuing the Speaker's gavel. On Monday, McCarthy did not rule out the possibility of returning as Speaker in order to settle the turmoil in the House and deal with the war taking place in Israel. McCarthy left open the possibility, telling Fox & Friends, “That's a decision by the conference. I'll allow the conference to make whatever decision; whether I'm a speaker or not, I'm a member of this body. I know what history has had, and I can lead in any position it is. And right now, I realize we need these five actions taken now and stop delaying.”
