A small but significant number of U.S. senators are sharing their excitement for a genuine conservative star who might challenge former President Donald Trump in 2024.
Since announcing his third White House run, Trump has struggled to gain traction. Recent controversies have led increasing numbers of Republicans to question his viability in a general election.
Thus far, nine members of Congress are publicly supporting Trump's candidacy.
They are:
- Outgoing Rep. Madison Cawthorn, R-N.C.
- Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla.
- Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas
- Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga.
- Rep. Ronny Jackson, R-Texas
- Rep.-elect Max Miller, R-Ohio
- Rep. Troy E. Nehls, R-Texas
- House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y.
- Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala.
Meanwhile, POLITICO‘s Marianne Levine reports that Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., has “significant congressional support” should he decide to run for president in 2024. Levine interviewed six Republican senators who heaped praise on Scott.
Sens. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, John Cornyn, R-Texas, John Barrasso, R-Wyo., and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., publicly expressed varying degrees of enthusiasm for a Scott run:
Joni Ernst is “very excited” about a potential Tim Scott presidential run. John Cornyn would “advise him to go for it.” And John Barrasso said it “doesn't get any better than Tim Scott.”
Even Sen. Lindsey Graham, who spent much of Donald Trump's presidency sticking to his side, said he's intrigued by the possibility of a Scott presidential bid in 2024 and wants to see “what Tim does” before he makes any endorsements.
Scott would “bring something to the table on day one,” Graham said, adding his South Carolina colleague has “one of the most compelling stories of any Republican out there.”
Scott's not personally chatty about the prospect of a 2024 presidential run, declining to talk and directing questions to his staff. But his Republican colleagues are buzzing about his massive reelection victory this year, rising national profile, substantial fundraising hauls and cross-country travels for other candidates. And they're happy to talk him up.
Scott has also accomplished something noteworthy in today's Republican Party: winning over the support of establishment party leaders and the dominant pro-Trump wing without alienating either group so far.

Trump is viable because he has been right on every issue and he is not part of the good ole boy career politician bunch that dwell in the snake swamp.
This possibly is remarkable. The profound respect Tim has garnered is really hard to question. He’d be a very good candidate for President of the United States. His “common sense” way of dealing with issues pertinent to our national interests cannot be overstated. A very fine and good young man cannot be better suited than Tim Scott.
I would vote for Senator Tim Scott unhesitatingly.
Lots of RINOs in the Scott endorsers. I will wait and see if he is NOT a RINO. Need to have someone as bold, courageous and ready to whip the Democrats in their relentless legislation that portends the dismantling of America.
I’ve admired Tim Scott for quite some time and would love to see him run for president. He holds conservative values which he always expresses calmly, quietly, yet with conviction.
I’m not a bit surprised that GOPe swamp lizards might be looking for alternatives to President Trump’s Swamp Sewage and Septic Sucking Services.
After all, it’s not about what we, the people, want. It’s all about them. Right?
The record of Senators becoming President is not stellar. Choose a President who has real executive experience.
Not one person on this list can beat Trump in a primary. DeSantis is the only one that can beat the windbag
