Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer acknowledged direct outreach with New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, signaling the Democratic Party’s efforts to unify after a high-profile progressive victory.
Fox News Senior Congressional Correspondent Chad Pergram reported Wednesday on X that Schumer stated, “This morning, I talked with Mayor-elect Mamdani. We had a very, very good conversation. We said that we cared about New York City and that we look forward to working together to help the city and improve the city. I congratulated him on running a very, very good campaign. And the issue that he is stressed is being stressed by Democrats across the country from one end of America to the other. The high costs that the Trump administration is imposing on us and their failure to do anything about it.”
Schumer has not issued a formal written statement regarding Mamdani, but his social media posts have celebrated broader Democratic successes nationwide. Following elections in New Jersey, Virginia, Mississippi, New York, Pennsylvania, and Georgia, Schumer stated that Democrats “swept last night in statewide and local races across the country,” claiming that Americans are “fed up with the failed Republican agenda” and praising Democratic efforts to address rising costs.
Progressive Momentum and Party Dynamics
Progressive organizations have framed Mamdani’s victory as a transformative moment for the Democratic Party. Our Revolution, the group founded by Senator Bernie Sanders, issued a press release Tuesday night asserting that Mamdani’s affordability-focused platform defeated Donald Trump, Democratic establishment figures, and donor networks from both parties. The group argued that traditional party leadership, including Schumer, is “losing relevance” in the face of grassroots activism.
National surveys also indicate voter dissatisfaction with Schumer, with a Monday poll showing 52 percent disapprove of his job performance and just 23 percent approving. In late October, Schumer declined to answer whether he would support Mamdani, though House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries endorsed the mayor-elect shortly before the election, emphasizing the importance of party unity and Mamdani’s focus on affordability and representing all New Yorkers.
Trump Criticizes Schumer as Democrats Shift Left
President Donald Trump weighed in on the changing dynamics, telling Breitbart News on October 21 that Schumer is “gonezo” and suggesting that Mamdani may now be emerging as a new figurehead for Democrats. Trump argued that the party has moved further left, claiming it “skipped socialism and they went down to communism,” and pointed to poll numbers as evidence that Schumer is “probably finished.”
Mamdani’s rise is being watched closely both inside and outside the Democratic Party as progressives claim increasing influence over the party’s direction, highlighting the ongoing tensions between establishment leadership and a new wave of progressive activists.
