A group of 20 U.S. senators has announced that they have secured a preliminary agreement on new gun legislation.
The bipartisan agreement, the first in nearly 30 years, includes “red flag” laws and enhanced background checks.
CNN further reports:
A bipartisan group of senators announced an agreement on principle for gun safety legislation Sunday, which includes “needed mental health resources, improves school safety and support for students, and helps ensure dangerous criminals and those who are adjudicated as mentally ill can’t purchase weapons,” they said in a statement.
Notably, the announcement includes the support of 10 Republican senators, which would give the proposal enough support to overcome the Senate filibuster. The agreement is significant given how divided lawmakers have been over the gun issue, but the actual legislative text is not yet written.
While details remain vague, we know that states would be given substantial resources to enforce their own “red flag” laws.
The proposal includes support for state crisis intervention orders, funding for school safety resources, an enhanced review process for buyers under the age of 21 and penalties for straw purchasing.
The group on the release includes Republican Sens. John Cornyn of Texas, Thom Tillis and Richard Burr of North Carolina, Roy Blunt of Missouri, Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Susan Collins of Maine, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Rob Portman of Ohio, Mitt Romney of Utah and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania. Democratic senators on the release include Kyrsten Sinema and Mark Kelly of Arizona, Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, Cory Booker of New Jersey, Chris Coons of Delaware, Martin Heinrich of New Mexico, Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Debbie Stabenow of Michigan. It also includes Sen. Angus King of Maine, an independent who caucuses with Democrats.
President Joe Biden said the agreement “reflects important steps in right direction,” though it doesn’t do everything he thinks is needed.

If schools would just beef up their entrances and exits, with cameras and electronic locks, like a lot of schools do now, and REQUIRE identification before entering AND exiting, it would be a good start. Also, just LOCK ALL THE DOORS. It may look like I’m shouting, but I’m not. Just trying to emphasize my answer. The Texas shooting would have been non-existent if they would have just locked the doors.
Common sense now a days is not so common.

on the gun front, it will be entertaining to watch all of the ‘unintended consequences’ come to fruition. . .just hope that the complicit ‘republicans’ are undone by this. . .
Very unlikely to get passed in the house because Pelosi didn’t have her fingers in the pie. Of course the loony liberal progressives will not like it because it does not include either registering all guns, or even the authority to take away all guns from the citizens. Unless we can purge all the left wing democrats from our government then our constitutional republic is doomed.
Another consequence of the Second Amendment!
America was sold down the river when the 18th-century founding fathers replaced Biblical responsibilities (based upon the moral law of God) for Enlightenment rights, and nothing demonstrates it better than the Second Amendment.
Think about it: The Amendment WITH the wording “shall not be infringed” is the MOST infringed, licensed, and limited Amendment of the entire twenty seven. Furthermore, a future generation of our posterity is likely to see the Second Amendment whittled away entirely or repealed altogether. This is inherent nature and danger of optional Enlightenment rights versus non-optional Biblical responsibilities, such as the following:
“Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword [or today’s equivalent] in their hand … this honor have all his saints. Praise ye Yah.” (Psalm 149:6-9)
“But if any provide not for his own, and especially for those of his own house [beginning with spiritual and physical protection], he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.” (1 Timothy 5:8)
Which is more potent: 1) An optional right, or 2) A non-optional responsibility?
Which is more likely to be infringed, licensed, and ultimately abolished altogether?
Which did the pre-Second Amendment Americans look to for their authority to bear arms, with little or nor infringement?

It is all a bunch of crap. Those 10 Senators are all Rinos. Vote all of them out. What right do they have to go against the Constitution? For every congressman/woman and Senators that lean to the left should never be voted into office. They have become dictators one and all.
Most of the laws are already on the books, except red flag laws which are nothing then abuse laws based on a persons personal agenda.
They had no problem beefing up security at airports to address the Terrorist threat. But somehow we can’t in our schools?
I have no real problem with the background checks. But the red flags guidelines are way to broad and subjective. Easily open to abuse based on ideology. If it can’t be objective and limits enforced, it’s just another tool for abuse.

If it wasn’t for guns in the hands of law abiding private citizens, the United States would already be a Socialist Nation, run by corrupt politicians on both sides of the aisle. The fact that there are over 400 million guns in the hands of law abiding citizens is the only thing preventing corrupt politicians from controlling every aspect of our lives and that incudes all Americans. Ask yourself this question: How does a politician become a millionaire while in office and then continue to grow their wealth long after they leave office, even though they never produce anything of value to the country or their constituents? Corruption! Follow the money!
There are those who want to get rid of the 2nd Amendment. Those are people who either have Not read this Amendment, only the last part or just don’t want to adhere to it. For those who are too lazy or just want to go by the NRA wants them to believe, This Amendment specifies WHO, When, Why and under What conditions a individual has the right to carry Arms. It Does NOT say that Everyone has this right.
This is probably the least adhered to Amendment of the Construction and It is in bad need of being updated.
1) The term Militia needs to be clarified to mean Legal.
2) In today’s society, other organization should be brought under the umbral of this term.
3) Anyone who is a member of a Legal Militia Must drill on a regulated basis under a Qualified Certified Official.
4) Military grade weapons should ONLY be part of the training and Armory of these Legal Militia to be used ONLY in designated types of operations under the designated leadership chain of command.
5) We have NO laws about ownership for these Military grade weapons, but the 2nd Amendment Does restrict Who can carry them in public. Anyone found carrying one of these weapons outside of the parameters of the 2nd Amendment would have it and ALL ammunition Confiscated and the owner to be accessed a Very Heavy Fine.
6) The Assault weapon ban should be reinstated PERMANETERL with the only exception is When this country is invaded by another Army, like the conditions found in the Ukraine today.
7) All Firearms owners should be required to have a license and show proof of Need verified by law enforcement and a mental health exert, Training and Insurance covering Loss, Theft and Liability to cover all damage resulting from the use of the weapon including medical, death expenses and legal fees. This would protect the owner as well as the public. Law enforces need not have access to this information until a clime is made. The information would be provided to to Law enforcement by the insurance company at the time a clam is reported.
8) All firearms sold MUST go through a Likened Gun dealers shop as primary sailor or intermediary seller by individuals for legal transfer of tidal.
9) Today, it is only fair that Firearms should be insured the same a motor vehicles. We have More deaths recorded today by firearms than mote vehicles.
10) Firearm Safety training on an annual bases showing the proper care , operation and locked storage with a locking mechanism that would prevent accidental discharge, trigger locks and locked storage lockers. Firearms and ammunition should Never be stored in the same locker.
11) For those gun enthused who want to experience using a military grade weapon, and Not a member of a legal Militia, Legally licensed “Shooting” clubs and Firing ranges could offer this option. The weapons would be stored on premises in a Certified Armory on site. Violators would be required to forfeit All weapons and ammunition.

• The farmers of the Construction were wise when they wrote the 2nd Amendment, but it lacks Teeth to prevent the abundant missuses after the first part of the 20th Century.
• I understand that this will Not stop this carnage overnight, but it will slow it down.
• I am 75 years old and up to the time I joined the U.S. Air Force, the NRA was a good organization that proper firearms safety and sportsmanship. Today it is all about sails and acting as the firearms industry lobbies, buying favors through donations to Congressman’s election campaigns.
This is the 5th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution: “No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.”
Red Flag Laws violate “nor be deprived of life, liberty, or Property, without due process of law.” Every individual has the right to face their accuser. Red Flag Laws violate this right.
My biggest concern is Red Flag Laws. While I believe they can be helpful in an emergency, I think it is imperative that due process be followed. No gun grabbing without giving reasons and how to get gun returned. Plus there needs to be a huge penalty for falsifying the need to grab the gun. Some people will use it as a way of getting revenge.
