House Speaker Mike Johnson canceled plans for a vote on the House Republican Conference’s six-month continuing resolution (CR) on Wednesday, which included the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, as internal divisions within his caucus intensify. The move comes as various members express their dissatisfaction with the resolution.

Former President Donald Trump weighed in on the debate Tuesday, urging House Republicans not to fund the government without assurances on election security. In a Truth Social post, Trump called on the GOP to block any CR that doesn’t address voter integrity issues. “If Republicans in the House, and Senate, don’t get absolute assurances on Election Security, THEY SHOULD, IN NO WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM, GO FORWARD WITH A CONTINUING RESOLUTION ON THE BUDGET,” Trump wrote. He accused Democrats of attempting to “stuff voter registrations with illegal aliens.” (RELATED: Trump Urges GOP To Block Government Funding Without ‘Election Security’ Assurances)

The deadline to pass a funding bill is Sept. 30. Without an agreement, the government faces a shutdown on Oct. 1.

The SAVE Act and Election Security Concerns

Supporters of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act argue that the legislation is crucial for ensuring that only U.S. citizens participate in American elections. They claim that foreign nationals have been found on voter rolls across all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and U.S. territories. Proponents maintain that loopholes in the National Voter Registration Act, which does not require proof of citizenship for voter registration, have allowed foreign nationals to vote in U.S. elections since at least 2008.

As the debate continues, the future of the SAVE Act and the broader funding bill remains uncertain, with time running out to avoid a partial government shutdown.
