WASHINGTON — Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik announced Friday she is ending her campaign for New York governor and will not seek reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives, a major shift in the state’s 2026 political landscape.
Stefanik said in a post on X that she is suspending her bid for governor, a race that would have pitched her against Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul in a tough general election environment for Republicans. She noted that a protracted Republican primary in a state that leans Democratic would not be an effective use of time or resources.

Her announcement leaves Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman as the leading GOP candidate for governor and clears what was expected to be a contentious contest on the right.
Stefanik also said she will not run for another term in Congress, ending her decade-plus tenure representing New York’s 21st Congressional District, which spans much of the North Country and Adirondack region.
First elected in 2014, Stefanik rose to national prominence as a staunch ally of President Donald Trump and served as House Republican Conference chair from 2021 to 2025 — making her one of the party’s highest-ranking women in leadership.
Her decision reshapes what had been a wide-open field to replace her in the House. With Stefanik out, Republicans and Democrats are expected to compete for the 21st District seat in 2026.
In an interview with reporter Ben Jacobs, Stefanik said her political instincts tell her the timing is wrong, arguing that conditions in New York make launching a campaign exceptionally challenging.
“It’s incredibly difficult in a picture-perfect year,” she said, “let alone with a primary and everything else.”

I am disappointed! I donated to her campaign, and I live in Texas (was born in NY but didn’t live there since I was toddler)! DemocRAT politicians are downright evil. They hate America! 🙁 They are liars, cheaters, with no ethics and are hypocritical morally bankrupt.
