Tom Kean Jr. finally broke his prolonged public silence this week after disappearing from Capitol Hill for months amid mounting questions about his health and political future.

Kean said he is recovering from a “personal medical issue” and expects to return to a full schedule soon, though he again declined to disclose specifics about his condition.

Mediaite reporter Zoe Engels has more on the congressman’s cryptic disclosure to the New Jersey Globe that are now fueling even more speculation and confusion:

“My doctors are confident that I’m on the road to a full recovery,” he said in a phone interview with the outlet Thursday afternoon. “I understand the need for public transparency, and I appreciate the support of my constituents.”

Kean Jr. told The New Jersey Globe that he is nearing a return to Congress, intends to publicly disclose more details about the health issues he’s endured and plans to seek re-election for a third term in 2026.

“I anticipate that in the next couple of weeks, I’ll return to voting and to the campaign trail,” Kean Jr. said, revealing he has been in touch with his congressional office daily.

The outlet also reported that Kean Jr. said his “prognosis is positive” with “no expected long-term effects or chronic health complications” and no “effect to his cognitive health.”

Kean Jr. issued a statement on social media April 27, making Thursday’s phone interview only his second public communication since March 5.

“I want to thank my constituents and colleagues for their patience as I address a personal medical issue,” the announcement read. “My doctors continue to assure me that my recovery will be complete and that I will be back to the job I love very soon. I expect to return to a full schedule and be at 100 percent. I take my responsibilities seriously and have a strong record of showing up and delivering, which makes this absence all the more difficult.”

New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District is widely regarded as one of the country’s most competitive House districts, and Kean is expected to face a difficult reelection campaign in 2026.

Major election analysts now rate the seat as a true toss-up. The Cook Political Report moved it from “Lean Republican” to “Toss Up,” citing “a tougher environment for the congressman,” a stronger Democratic field, and the district’s long-term suburban shift away from Republicans.

The district has a long recent history of razor-close elections:

  • Democrat Tom Malinowski beat Kean by about 1 point in 2020.
  • Kean flipped the seat in 2022 by roughly 3 points.
  • Kean won reelection in 2024 by a relatively narrow margin again.

Democrats are once again aggressively targeting the seat as one of their top pickup opportunities as they push to reclaim the House majority.
