CENTCOM Commander Adm. Brad Cooper sharply rebuked Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) during a tense congressional hearing Tuesday after the congressman questioned how many Americans would have to die for what he described as President Donald Trump’s “mistake” in Iran.
Heated Exchange Breaks Out During Hearing
During the hearing, Moulton pressed Cooper over Trump’s calls for Iran’s “unconditional surrender” while criticizing the administration’s handling of the conflict.
“I would like to know how many more Americans we have to ask to die for this mistake,” Moulton said during the exchange.
Cooper immediately pushed back.
“I think that’s an entirely inappropriate statement from you, sir, with all due respect,” the CENTCOM commander responded.
Moulton later insisted he was asking a question rather than making a political statement.
Injured US Troops Continue Recovering
The tense exchange unfolded as injured American troops continue recovering.
Fifteen U.S. service members have been killed during the war, while more than 500 troops have been wounded. Military officials say the vast majority of injured personnel have received treatment and returned to duty.
The deadliest single incident occurred in March 2026, when an Iranian drone attack on the port of Schwiba in Kuwait killed six American soldiers.
Iranian Casualties Estimated in the Thousands
International rights organizations estimate that more than 6,000 Iranian military personnel and security forces have been killed during joint U.S.-Israeli strikes.
Precise civilian casualty figures remain difficult to independently verify because of strict Iranian government media restrictions. However, human rights monitors say they have documented 1,701 civilian deaths, including at least 254 children.
Political Divisions Deepen in Washington
The heated exchange highlighted growing divisions in Washington over the administration’s Iran strategy.
Critics continue questioning the long-term objectives and potential costs of the war, while military leaders and administration officials argue the operation remains necessary for regional security and U.S. strategic interests.
As casualties continue rising, the political debate surrounding the conflict appears likely to intensify further in the months ahead.
