Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent acknowledged Wednesday that he threatened to “kick ass” during a heated confrontation last year, while firmly denying reports that he threatened to punch the now-acting Director of National Intelligence “in the face.”

The unusual exchange emerged during a Senate Finance Committee hearing, where Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) pressed Bessent about reports surrounding a confrontation between the two Trump administration officials during the summer of 2025.

According to Bessent, one key detail in the widely circulated account was inaccurate.

The Trump White House flatly rejected a dramatic appeal by Rep. Maria Salazar (R-FL), who invoked divine intervention in urging President Donald Trump to support her sweeping amnesty and migration expansion bill. Salazar’s comments, made at a Capitol Hill press conference this week, were met with swift pushback from Trump’s administration and from immigration policy analysts who say her proposal would undermine working-class Americans.

“The same God who saved you from death in Pennsylvania one year ago and who put you back in the Oval Office, against all odds, is the same God Almighty who millions and millions [of illegal migrants] are begging to for some type of dignity,” Salazar said, directly addressing Trump. “You have been called to do this, to fix this 40-year mess with just one signature: Yours … May the Lord guide you.”

But Trump’s press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, quickly dismissed the religiously framed pitch. “The president made it clear he will not support amnesty for illegal aliens in any way,” she said Thursday. “From my understanding, neither the White House nor the President has actually read through this legislation.”

Salazar, who has marketed herself as a “centrist” on immigration within the GOP, is pushing legislation that would grant broad work authorization, legal status protections, and pathways to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants. Her bill includes dramatic increases in both low-skilled and high-skilled worker visas, allows illegal migrants to remain indefinitely under certain conditions, and enables foreign nationals to skip long-standing immigration backlogs through premium processing payments.

Critics argue the bill would reward unlawful entry into the United States while flooding the labor market with cheap foreign labor at the expense of American workers. “This is an amnesty for illegal workers and for the business interests who rely on them,” said Jessica Vaughan of the Center for Immigration Studies. “It’s an unholy alliance between immigrant advocacy groups and big business.”

Vaughan called Salazar’s religious appeal to Trump “insulting,” arguing that Trump’s core base wants secure borders, not “flattery and moral guilt trips.” She added, “They’re never going to agree with him on any of his actual policy goals. He doesn’t need these people,” referring to the lawmakers championing the bill.

Salazar tried to frame her proposal in historic terms, comparing Trump’s opportunity to enact her plan with Abraham Lincoln’s fight against slavery and Ronald Reagan’s battle against communism. “You could be for immigration what Lincoln was for slavery and Reagan was for communism,” she claimed. “You are a businessman who understands our economy needs a reliable working force in areas where other Americans don’t participate.”

In a way, Salazar may have been right that Trump has the potential to be for immigration what Reagan was for communism or Lincoln was for slavery—but not in the way she intended. While she imagines Trump enshrining a legacy of expanded migration and amnesty, his most ardent supporters are looking for the opposite: a decisive end to the decades of open borders, mass migration, and lax enforcement that they believe have driven down wages, overwhelmed schools and hospitals, strained housing markets, and diluted national identity. For them, Trump’s historic role is not to accommodate the status quo but to break it—once and for all—by reasserting national sovereignty, enforcing the law, and restoring a vision of America where legal immigration serves the national interest and citizenship is earned, not handed out.

“We want low interest rates, and we want to be able to have our youth be able to buy homes, housing, get good jobs,” Trump said at a rally last year. “You have people dying financially … they can’t do anything, and they’re living horribly in our country right now.”

Salazar’s bill has found support from a handful of GOP legislators, particularly those from agriculture-heavy or immigrant-heavy districts, such as Reps. Dan Newhouse (R-WA), Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL), and David Valadao (R-CA). However, it faces fierce opposition from the majority of House Republicans and conservative voters, who view the bill as a betrayal of core America First values.

The sharp divide over Salazar’s bill highlights broader tensions within the GOP over immigration, with business-aligned moderates still pushing for expanded migration and populist conservatives demanding tighter controls. While Trump’s firm rejection signals where the party’s base stands, the continued push from lawmakers like Salazar shows the ideological tug-of-war isn’t over.

“This is about who the Republican Party serves,” Vaughan concluded. “Is it American workers and their families—or donors and corporate employers who want an endless supply of cheaper labor?”

You use the of God to promote breaking federal law? I’m not surprised, the church uses scripture to rationalize human trafficking bring illegal aliens criminally into our country. If I don’t say and push back, I have to face the ultimate Judge in the end. It’s wrong.
