Arizona Democratic Sen. Ruben Gallego is launching an effort to challenge a new Trump Administration immigration policy that could require many green card applicants to leave the United States and complete the process abroad.

According to a report from The Hill, Gallego is not only seeking to overturn the policy itself but is also pursuing a procedural strategy that could make it easier for Congress to reverse the change.

The dispute revolves around a recent U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) policy affecting how certain immigrants obtain lawful permanent residency.

NATIONAL SECURITY

Partisan politics threaten to derail Ukraine aid package as Biden runs out of money. President Joe Biden has nearly run out of funds to continue sending highly sought-after U.S. military aid to Ukraine, and partisanship in Congress threatens to hold up swift passage of a bill for additional assistance.

HOMELAND SECURITY

TRUMP WAS RIGHT – OF COURSE, THEY SHOULD REMAIN – US Supreme Court weighs ‘remain in Mexico’ immigration dispute. U.S. Supreme Court justices on Tuesday grappled with President Joe Biden’s bid to rescind a hardline immigration policy begun under his predecessor Donald Trump that forced tens of thousands of migrants to stay in Mexico to await U.S. hearings on their asylum claims.

CHINA THREAT

Why Xi is trapped in Ukraine. Now, it is Russia, not China, sitting in the geopolitical driver’s seat.

Red line or no, secrecy over China-Solomon Islands pact piques US suspicion. Stopping short of saying “red line,” a senior State Department official said a US delegation warned the Solomon Islands about a US response should China attempt to have a “de facto” military presence there.

Taiwan says Ukraine conflict will inform this year’s military drills. Taiwan’s main military drills this year will draw on the experiences of the war in Ukraine, focusing on asymmetric and cognitive warfare as well as use of reserves as it practices fighting off a Chinese attack, a top officer said on Wednesday.

HMMM? Chinese drone giant DJI suspends business in Russia, Ukraine. DJI, the world’s largest drone manufacturer, has announced it is temporarily halting operations in Russia and Ukraine, in a rare example of a Chinese firm suspending business in response to the war in Ukraine.

RUSSIA THREAT

US, allies promise to keep backing Ukraine in its war with Russia. The United States’ top defense officials on Tuesday urged more nations to provide more weaponry, at a faster pace, to Ukraine as it prepares for the next phase of its defense against Russian aggressors.

NO KIDDING – Russia accused of ‘gas blackmailing’ after cutting off Poland, Bulgaria. Russia will suspend the delivery of natural gas to Poland and Bulgaria this week, energy officials in the two countries said Tuesday, announcing a significant escalation in the economic tension between Moscow and the West over the war in Ukraine.

In Ukrainian villages, fears grow for men taken to Russia. Russian forces stayed only 10 days in the tiny village of Velykyi Bobryk, but when they left they took six local men with them. Now their families are trying to find out what happened to their loved ones.

NICE – Germany sending ‘Gepard’ air-defense tanks to support Ukraine defense. The German government will send Ukraine around 50 Gepard air-defense tanks to help that country repel Russian attacks, German and U.S. officials said at a conference here.

Britain says Ukraine controls majority of its airspace. Ukraine retains control over the majority of its airspace, Britain’s defense ministry said on Wednesday, adding that Russia has failed to effectively destroy the country’s air force or suppress its air defenses.

IRAN THREAT

Deterring Iran becomes key mission for US Air Force wing reactivated 20 years ago. The 379th Air Expeditionary Wing, based at Al Udeid in Qatar, supported the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria, flying combat missions, transporting troops and supplies, conducting surveillance and providing battlefield communications.

US MILITARY AND SPACE

It’s the Wedgetail: Air Force to buy E-7 to replace current AWACS. The Air Force announced Tuesday it will replace part of the E-3 Sentry, or Airborne Warning and Control System, fleet with Boeing E-7 Wedgetails.

SLAP ON THE WRIST? Air Force general sentenced to reprimand, pay forfeiture for sexual assault. Air Force Maj. Gen. William T. Cooley, the former head of the Air Force Research Laboratory, was sentenced Tuesday to a reprimand and forfeiture of $10,910 a month for five months for the sexual assault of his brother’s wife.

NOT ENOUGH SHIPS – Marines couldn’t meet request to surge to Europe due to strain on amphibious fleet. As Russia prepared to invade Ukraine, the head of U.S. European Command asked for a Marine Expeditionary Unit and Amphibious Ready Group to deploy early to Europe as a hedge against the conflict expanding.
