The Taxachusetts Squeeze
Taxpayers are always the losers in Massachusetts.
While Governor Maura Healey loves to claim she cut taxes, the reality is that the middle class is getting clobbered with paying more and more in taxes in the People’s Republic of Massachusetts.
Last January, Healey proposed a budget that would create a new tax on candy and increase taxes on prescription drugs. The legislature, which is overwhelmingly left-leaning, are no fools, so they ditched the Healey tax increases.
That did not stop Healey. This woke Democrat Governor had her Department of Revenue find regulations allowing her to impose a new cable box tax. So when she could not pass a tax increase in the legislature, she did it via regulations.
But the big enchilada is property taxes. The rates are set at the local level, but Healey has not increased state aid to municipalities. Communities are receiving local aid with no adjustment for inflation. Hence, it has been cut for cities and towns despite the state taking in record levels of revenue, which she has spent on illegal immigrants.
As you may suspect, communities are feeling the pinch! Over 160 municipalities out of the 351 are asking at the ballot box for voters to approve property tax hikes to cover their operating expenses of police, fire, and schools.
No community would need a property tax increase if Healey had not spent $3 billion on housing illegal immigrants. Each community could have received $15 million in additional local aid.
Instead of cutting the money for the illegals to help communities pay for basic services, Healey has come up with a new way to get money out of our wallets. She has filed legislation to allow municipalities to increase local option taxes on meals and hotels, along with creating a new excise tax on cars. See why they call us Taxachusetts.
Now, when these communities increase these taxes, Healey is hoping to be held harmless at the ballot box in 2026. It was not her who increased taxes. It was the local board of selectmen or the mayor. She cannot help it that they increased taxes.
However, the truth of the matter is that by cutting local aid, she has shifted the tax burden to communities. Luckily, we have only a year to go before throwing her out of office.

This sounds a lot like Colorado. We are protected from a new tax or an increase in various taxes by our “Taxpayer Bill Of Rights” known as TABOR. All new taxes or a tax increase must be voted on by Colorado residents. To circumvent TABOR the completely DemocRAT controlled legislature and DemocRAT Governor simply calls a new tax, a “FEE”, thereby creating a new tax, such as the 10 cent “fee” on all grocery bags or various “fees” paid on motor vehicle registrations. All this while giving millions of $$$ to illegal aliens. Our Governor, “Twinky-Dink” Jared Polis LIES when he claims Colorado is not a SANCTUARY STATE !
