President Donald Trump’s call for Republicans to be “flexible” on support for taxpayer-funded abortion to help pass taxpayer-funded health care is drawing widespread opposition from Republicans.
Polls consistently show the public overwhelmingly opposes taxpayer-funded abortion, with even majorities of Democrats and “pro-choice” voters saying they do not support taxpayer funding. For decades the “Hyde Amendment” has prohibited the use of federal tax funds to directly pay for abortions
“For decades, opposition to taxpayer funding of abortion and support for the Hyde Amendment has been an unshakeable bedrock principle and a minimum standard in the Republican Party. To suggest Republicans should be ‘flexible’ is an abandonment of this decades-long commitment. If Republicans abandon Hyde, they are sure to lose this November,” said SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser.
“The voters sent a GOP trifecta to Washington and they expect it to govern like one. Giving in to Democrat demands that our tax dollars are used to fund plans that cover abortion on demand until birth would be a massive betrayal,” said Dannenfelser
“As of 2025, the Hyde Amendment is estimated to have saved more than 2.6 million lives. SBA Pro-Life America opposes any health care proposal that fails to include Hyde Amendment protections and will continue to score against any effort that forces Americans to pay for abortions or abortion coverage. In October, more than 100 pro-life groups sent a letter to Congress urging lawmakers to stop taxpayer funding of abortion through Obamacare,” SBA Pro-Life America notes.
